I battled a myriad of emotions while listening to Along the Broken Road . . . I've got army in my blood . . . I'm the mom of two war veteran sons and the wife of a retired soldier . . . I've watched PTSD up close . . . I've been the one trying to hold a family together while the soldier is deployed . . . my heart went out to Charlee, the too strong, independent daughter of Major Mack . . . and her soldier brothers . . . and to Ian Carslisle, the soldier who returned from battle to read the journal to Charlee . . . and no mother to pull them to her and make it alright . . . a twelve year girl trying to replace a mother . . . more than enough brokenness to go around . . . but as the days go by and Ian slowly gets closer to Charlee, and the pages are read, one by one to her from her father's journal, the healing begins . . . the strong outer veneer cracks, and all the ugly comes out . . . and it has to . . . for all of us . . . or it will rot us, from the inside out . . . well, written, thoughtful story with a beautiful ending . . .

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this to anyone. This book has wonderful characters that are very realistic -- I wanted to know these people and talk to them.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I enjoyed Ian. He had a fine line to toe to follow his friend's wishes to take the diary to Charlee, and to give her the time needed to accept the gift. His emotions went all over the place -- frustration, joy, love, compassion. He accepted the lessons learned from the errors of his younger days, and the days in the army to become a very good and wise man.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Definitely! I had a hard time putting it down. I don't listen to many books a second time, but this is one that I believe I will.
Any additional comments?
After thoroughly enjoying listening to Heather Burch's book One Lavender Ribbon, I immediately searched out other books by her and found this one. It is the start of a series, and I look forward to getting to know the rest of the family!
