Publisher's summary

In this instant USA Today best seller, a marriage of convenience between a duke's niece and a reformed rogue leads to a delightful battle of wills.

For Miss Charlotte Windham, the best way to maintain her spinsterhood - and her independence - is a teeny, tiny brush with scandal. She chooses wealthy, handsome upstart Lucas Sherbourne as her unwitting accomplice. He's intelligent, logical, and ambitious. What Charlotte doesn't count on is that one kiss will lead them straight to the altar.

Sherbourne has no love for polite society, nor is he keen on being anybody's husband of last resort. He is attracted to Charlotte's boldness, though - and her family's influence. Without a title, he knows he'll never truly be part of their world, even as he and Charlotte inch closer to a marriage that means much more than convenience. But a scheming business partner is about to test that tenuous trust, forcing Sherbourne to make a drastic choice: his wealth or his wife.

"Smart, sexy, and oh-so romantic." (Mary Balogh)

"If you're not reading Grace Burrowes you're missing the very best in today's Regency Romance!" (Elizabeth Hoyt)

Excellent wrap up of the Windhams

Poor Charlotte is getting all the family attention because she's the last to marry. And our Grace goes and pulls the antagonist from the last book and makes him believably sympathetic as a match for an understandably prickly heroine.

The marriage is a bit rushed, but needs to be for the struggles of this couple to mesh in a relationship are the perfect focus. Many of the issues resonate today. A woman who loves math and bookkeeping struggling to get her husband to let her look at the books of his business. A man used to being the wealthy provider running into business problems. (I'm glossing over the major themes as I don't want to give spoilers and those are only a couple of the problems this couple run up against.) As always, a lovely character study with believable antagonists.

If you haven't read a Burrowes, go ahead and grab this one. You can start anywhere and each book stands alone. But you won't want to miss a one once you start.

I want to take a moment to shout out to James Langton, the narrator for this series. I always forget he's reading, because he immerses me so deeply in the story and keeps each character clearly delineated. Yet the moment I hear his voice, I give a wriggle of pleasure knowing I'll be enjoying whatever story he's reading to me. (It doesn't hurt that Burrowes gives him such fabulous material to work with.)

He will forever be the voice of this series and I hope he does every Grace Burrowes book from now until one of them has to stop working.

Overall disappointing

I would save my credit and skip this one if I could go back in time. Plot was to slow to develop, ended up using the book to help me go to sleep at night instead of enjoying. Not enough romance, more a study on marriage and yeah, boring. Narrator was great though.

Loved It

I didn’t ’t realize I hadn’t put in a review for this. I have had it in my “what to listen to when you need a lift” collection forever. I love all the ornery people coming together to trounce the villain. Grace was too nice to the guy as usual (don’t let him have contact until the child is of age and understands the facts!). James Langton was glorious as always.

A romance that begins where most most romances end

A very different story begins with a hasty wedding between two people who are marrying for all the wrong reasons. The meat of the tale is how they forge a bond despite mistakes, distractions, ambitions, and secrets. There is a bit too much time spent on the antagonist (a total toad) and his marriage but otherwise a very enjoyable read.

The book can be read as a stand alone, but it is more enjoyable if you read it's predecessor where you meet the characters.

Lovely story, interesting characters

Oh how I love the Windham sisters, Charlotte and Elizabeth. They are strong and loving. And Sherborne....he's the perfect hero. Strong enough to stand up to, with and for his beloved Charlotte. This is a delightful story with delightful characters. I highly recommend. I really really love that Shernorne, the Duke and the Marquess are all friends and allies.

Not my favorite

But an ok Grace Burrowes is still pretty good. I liked the characters and premise, it just seemed a bit dull compared to others from this author. I also don't care for many of the voices the narrator uses. The men all sound old and the women very masculine so am not sure if that had something to do with my lukewarm enjoyment of the story itself. As I said, though, I am a huge Grace Burrowes fan and will look forward to the next read/listen.
