Publisher's summary

When rare book librarian Emma Boyd searches for a pirate's long-lost treasure map, she learns the hard way that pirates still exist in today's world - and some modern pirates steal maps, others steal hearts. The treasure map she seeks belonged to the Caribbean pirate Thomasina Farris, who disappeared in 1715 without a trace. Did Captain Tommy steal an entire treasure from a Spanish galleon and escape? Did she die by another pirate's sword? Or did she die of a broken heart when the woman she loved disappeared? Emma's and Tommy's stories collide when Emma, after uncovering the truth about Captain Tommy's fate, must decide her own... and the choice is between romance or revenge.

There's not enough good Lesbian pirates books.

I read the book back when it first came out and enjoyed it a lot. The audible version was just as good. if you like pirate tales, I think you'll like it.

She's a better author than narrator

I really enjoyed the story. Strong, believable women in all the main characters. Just enough sexiness to make it fun, but nothing too explicit. Fun double plot between pirate and modern research librarian lives.
The narration was just ok. She sounded more or less fine for the modern bits, though her cadence needs work, and pretty awkward for the historical parts. It wasn't awful, but there's a reason people become authors and it's not because they are awesome narrators.
I would totally listen to another book BY C. friend, and if she took a few more lessons from some real pro narrators, I would even listen TO her read her own work.
Worth it if you like pirates, women and mysteries!

A mixed bag but good overall

I liked this book but it was hard to rate; I so vastly preferred the pirate half of the story that I wish I could rate them separately. I'd give that half 5 stars and the modern half probably 3 or 3.5; it was decent, but I groaned a little every time it switched back to the modern half because I was so invested in the historical ladies. Which also meant it bugged me that their story was wrapped up more by information given in the modern-day storyline than shown in their narrative. I understand why the author chose to do it that way, but I wanted more of Tommy! Lesbian pirates is a wonderful idea on its own and I loved their story.

I thought the author was a good reader; not a professional, but solid. Her accent was a little distracting, but also rather charming, especially once I got used to it.

Biphobia warning: I was warned for this on a review on Goodreads, so I want to make sure others are aware. Emma, the protagonist in the modern half of the book, makes reference several times to "turning women straight" because they dated men after dating her. She doesn't mention whether they said to her they felt they were heterosexual after breaking up with her, but more than likely they were bi or pan. Once more for the people in the back: dating someone of the opposite gender does not automatically make you straight and it does not mean you aren't bi/pan "anymore." Perhaps because I was forewarned, I wasn't TOO bothered by these lines (though I wasn't happy about them) and they were hardly the focus of the book. But I know it may be a dealbreaker for some, and forewarned is forearmed.

Gina Davis

It was funny. I was listening to the book and kept thinking, I know that voice. I then realized that the narrator sounds like Gina Davis. lol Must be the accent. Wonderful book. The first switch from the past to the present caught me off guard but I figured it out and was soon lost in the story. This is one of the best Lesbian themed books I have listened to and I have at least two hundred in my library. Next to Backwards to Oregon, this is my favorite. Enjoy!

Glad I chose this book!

It was kinda hard to get started, the narrator was a little annoying. It did get better and I really liked it!

Good story; meh narration

The narrator didn't do the story any favors. No offense meant to the author, who also is the narrator, but it was not good. I got no emotion from her and her pronunciations on certain things just irked me.

The story was decent enough. It jumped back and forth between the past following Pirate Thomasina Farris and the future following Emma, a librarian who was researching Captain Tommy and her truth of her life, death and buried treasure. The back and forth was surprisingly not annoying; the author did a good job transitioning between the two stories.

It was a lesbian love story in both the past and future and as stated in the narrative, I love a good pirate story, especially when the captain is a woman. It was the story that kept me going as even putting it to x2.0 speed couldn't help with the narrator's lack of passion in the reading. Don't think I would get another audiobook if the author narrates; however, I think I would read another of her books.

A Pirate's Heart

When I chose this book, I was hoping for maybe some paranormal/supernatural aspect, but it's actually a narrative split between two points in time. I enjoyed the high seas adventure of A Pirate's Heart, but not so much the more contemporary parts of the story. Even so, I give this book a high rating, because I love a good female pirate story. I just wish the narrator had been able to do Rebecca's voice; knowing that she should have an island accent, and it not being there was a little disruptive to the flow.

Glad I gave it a chance

I am glad I actually gave this book a chance. It was a good read. I feel like the author should have let someone else do the narration but it wasn't bad at all. Enjoyable story and worth the purchase.
