Publisher's Summary

Millie Ash, born into terrible poverty in the backstreets of the East End, has always wanted to better herself. She gets her chance when she lands a position as a lady’s companion, her charge the disabled daughter of a well-to-do London family. Millie adores her work, and even starts to develop feelings for the son of the house.
But years later a tragic accident causes Millie to lose her job and, along with it, the life she so loved. As she goes from job to job, working variously as a typist, factory worker, and nurse, will she ever find happiness, and love, again?
Kim Hicks reads Dee Williams’ heartrending family saga.

Starts great, but the second half weak

Wow, I thought I'd really discovered a great book. The first half of this book is tremendous, lots of detail, great characters, and a sympathetic heroine. Unfortunately, the second half (once the war starts), seems to be written as footnotes. There is very little characterization, just a successive series of events which aren't very well described. There seems to be a lot of loose ends, and the relationship and details are very flat- like you are listening to a plot outline. I was hoping for resolution to some of the issues the character faced like her abusive dad, and missing brothers. The last 5 minutes seemed tacked on.

Overall, it is still a good book but it becomes disappointingly less like a story and more like a first draft halfway through.
