Publisher's summary

Senator Richards is a dirty senator; he's borrowed money from the Italian mob and is unable to pay them back. Calix has wanted the Senator's daughter, Anya, since he first saw her when she was 18. He tried ignoring his attraction to her and the unusual pull she had, with her being so young. But here he was four years later and still wanting her.

Anya hates all self-important men. Any man who has anything in common with her father is not a man she wants to know or be near. So when Calix walks up to her at one of her father's banquets inviting her to dinner, she rudely blows him off.

Calix, having waited years for Anya, is pissed when Anya rejects him and snubs him. So with her father owing his uncle a lot of money, a bargain was struck where everyone except Anya can get what they want. But when bargains are made and people are betrayed, the ends may justify the means. But can Calix and Anya survive the end?

Warning: This book is a dark romance meant for mature listeners due to sexual content.

Holy Rape Porn, Batman!

I thought the "dark romance meant for mature listeners due to sexual content" warning meant there was serious erotica going on. I did not expect that the first time the main character and the love interest are in a room alone he would rape her of her virginity against a desk as she scream no, but it's cool because she's clearly getting wet. Perhaps it's unfair of me to judge the book by something that simply doesn't turn me on, but the love story in which a woman meekly falls for a man after such an encounter, or in which the man is desperately in love with a woman but would start of a romance in such a way just rings very false to me.

I will say that hearing the narrator read the orgasms was almost worth the lost credit. From whinnying like a horse to shrieking Calix's name, like Captain Kirk screaming "KAAAAHHHHN!!," much like Anya, my mind said "no," but my body said "hahahahaha!"

Rapey jerk who has no redeeming qualities rapes screaming virgin, in a tantrum fit. (as read to you in detail by grandma. )

I stopped a chapter six in between laughter and horror at grandma.

'Dark Romance' is Misleading

The premise was a set up for a dark romance, and there was definitely a scene at the beginning that was DARK. After that, Calix spent the rest of the book trying to make it up to Anya. It was really DARK and he definitely needed to do some extensive groveling, but in comparison to some of the other stories, it was tame. I firmly believe that Calix did Anya a favor by getting her and her mother out of the family situation she was suffering in (despite being a grown adult living on her own) and then doing his very best to prove his love to her.

Another issue was that the vast majority of the narration was much quieter than any of my other audiobooks. I could barely make out the voices over my car's Bluetooth connection, instead I had to listen with headphones outside of my daily commute. The real problem with this was that the uncle's voice was so loud that it physically hurt my ears a couple of times. Maybe this was because his general personality is that of an angry man, but even when he wasn't actively being angry (which I don't think being loud is the only option for portraying) I felt like I was getting yelled at and unable to hear the other half of the dialogue at the same time.
