Publisher's summary

Madeline and Daphne were once as close as sisters - until a secret tore them apart. Now it might take them to their graves.

They knew his name, the man who tried to brutally attack 12-year-old Madeline in her grandmother's hotel. They thought they knew his fate. He wouldn't be bothering them anymore...ever. Still, their lives would never be the same.

Madeline has returned to Washington after her grandmother's mysterious death. And at the old, abandoned hotel - a place she never wanted to see again - a dying man's last words convey a warning: The secrets she and Daphne believed buried forever have been discovered. Now, after almost two decades, Madeline and Daphne will be reunited in friendship and in fear. Unable to trust the local police, Madeline summons Jack Rayner, the hotel chain's new security expert. Despite the secrets and mysteries that surround him, Jack is the only one she trusts...and wants.

Jack is no good at relationships, but he does possess a specific skill set that includes a profoundly intimate understanding of warped and dangerous minds. With the assistance of Jack's brother, Abe, a high-tech magician, the four of them will form an uneasy alliance against a killer who will stop at nothing to hide the truth....

Not terrible

This book is a light romance disguised as a light mystery novel. The narrator was fine, the book was well written (meaning no grammar issues or poor word usage). It just wasn't my cup of tea. I finished it, not wanting to waste the credit. It was mildly interesting but it didn't have any depth. If you're looking for lightweight reading, this would fit the bill.

Great story. Terrible reader.

This reader uses the same voices for characters and will even change style mid-thought. For instance, she may start an exchange without an accent and then end with one. She also uses the wrong influxes often.

mystery and more

I liked that the main character took charge when she needed to do so. Others in this story helped and made it so much more. It has - murder, mystery, character growth, love, friendship and so much more.

Ehhh

Not one of my favorite of hers. It had mystery and all that but slow and predictable.

Sensational!!!

As always Ms. Krentz put out a fantastic book. It surpassed my expectations and then some. But what amazes me more is the telling of the story by Amanda Cobb. I could listen to her voice all day. Hell! I did listen to her all day and it was a pleasure. Ms. Cobb made you feel like you were there on the island.

I'm Sorry Jayne

I didn't really like this book. I really wanted to because Jayne is on my Top ten list. Jayne Castle and Amanda Quick, however, have higher ratings. I wanted to quit a third of the way in but stuck with it, but it took me days and I had to force myself. I listened to two other audios while fitting this one in.
Amanda Cobb did not do very well, a lot of the time I didn't know who was talking, which female, and sometimes not sure if it was a male. I hate when that happens.
The story seemed amateurish.
Have you ever noticed that sometimes when you're reading a book by your favorite author, you think "who wrote this?" and you check the title and author again to make sure you didn't pick up another book by mistake. This is how I felt about this book. My eyes rolled so much I got dizzy.
The female lead was so-so, I didn't care about her or even like her. I don't feel like we got to know Daphne much and I liked her more than Madaline. Jack was likable, but I would have enjoyed a deeper background on him and his issues.
Don't feel bad Jayne if you read this. There is a supposedly a more popular author, that does the same series of three over and over and over again that I find so disappointing I quit reading her altogether.

Great plot!

Really enjoy this author. The story had good flow, unexpected twist, and held my attention right up to the last few minutes! I honestly thought I had the book figured out and then there were still a couple last twists.

Jayne has done it again for me! Loved it.

Are we listening to the same book, I loved it and thought it was great. It is a murder mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Jack Rayner was contracted to become the new security expert for a chain of hotels he didn’t think that his job would consist of doing background checks on the men that his boss Madeline was dating. Nor did he think that he would be thrown into an eighteen year old cover up involving a twelve year old Madeline, and her best friend Daphne.
Before opening up his own security firm with his brother Abe, Jack was a criminal profiler for the FBI. Now he has a new profile to figure out, but the stakes are much higher. This criminal is after his client Madeline. Although, Madeline drives him crazy an even tried to fire him after the death of her grandmother, he is drawn to her and vows to keep her safe. Madeline and Jack have and intense chemistry which is obvious to everyone around them even though each one of them states that they don't do relationships. Abe and Daphne seem to be doing ok together too.
This is a great and sometimes complex story that not only has your anxiety level rising, it also has a delicious sense of humor that will bring out a giggle in spite of the drama of the story. Just when you think you have it figured out it takes a different turn and keeps on going. Its fun getting to peel away the layers.

Good for a long road trip

It was a good story line for a road trip. My daughter got me started on her books as they are more than just a love story.
