1940s, Love, Liars and War

The bombing of Pearl Harbor set in motion the enlistment of many young patriotic men, including Michael Hutchinson. Engaged to Sarah Jane Hunter and attending Auburn University, where they both were studying to be veterinarians, Michael joined the marines. At first wanting to postpone their wedding until after the war, then relenting, the two were married and Michael soon left for basic training. The fly in the ointment was his former girlfriend, Sylvia, who took every opportunity to ruin Sarah Jane’s peace. Finding herself pregnant, Sylvia tricked William, a young man she had just met into marrying her, just before he left for the army. Left in the same house with Sarah Jane while their husbands were deployed, Sylvia does all she can to make life miserable. But the sweet baby boy she gives birth to brings joy. Sarah Jane gets a job working for the crochety old veterinarian in town, and keeps her eyes and heart turned upon the Lord as she waits for Michael to return home. This is a wonderful, third installment to the series, with plenty of unexpected twists and turns in the tale. I, like many readers/listeners wish there was a fourth/final book.
