Publisher's summary

Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." That's the offer of Christianity, from God himself.

Just look at what happens when people are touched by Jesus: the blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life. In other words, to be touched by God is to be restored. To become all God meant you to be. That is what Christianity is supposed to do for you; make you whole, set you free, bring you fully alive.

But Jesus also warned that the path to that life is narrow, and few people would find it. You'll notice few have. Waking the Dead will help you find that life, see the fierce battle over your heart, and embrace all that God has for you.

There is so much more. Do you want it?

Critic reviews

"The book...has an unguarded heart and an opinionated lucidity that may surprise readers. Eldredge is honest about the fact that life can be arduous, confusing and filled with despair, but he also affirms a deep Christian hope." (Publishers Weekly)

I've been Awakened!

I came across this book in passing and now realize it was meant to be. This is an excellent book and destroyed so many illusions for me that I'm starting to re-read it and have gotten the hardcover book to go through. I've already loaned the book to two others and mention it constantly. I was listening to the book during my daily commute and heard my inner "doubts" making comments about what I was hearing only to hear Mr. Eldredge voice those same doubts. This really made me realize the battle I was up against to become fully alive. God Loves Us All! You'll love the book and enjoy the stories, humor, and warmth that come from listening.

Not your Fathers Christianity

John Eldredge will take you down the path of what God has intended for you to be. Wake up to the fact that your an Image of God, not focusing on your brokeness. I have seen men dying to be men, this is a guide on how to be the man that God and your family needs you to be.

Glean truth from this one!

This is one of the best Christian books I have read in a while. Oddly enough, Sacred Romance also fits in this category. The reader does a great job also; Dolan also reads The Message.

I am still working through all the information contained in this book to see if I believe it all. It is, after all, a book written by a man. There is, however, truth to be gleaned from it. Definitely worth the money and time.

Read it and allow the Holy Spirit to do a deep work in you through it. I especially liked being reminded that we have an enemy set against us and the focus on redemptive community.

Why all the drama?

I didn't enjoy this book. It felt like a sales pitch delivered with drama intended to scare folks. The author takes the position that life is hard because we're born in a war zone between God and Satan, and that most people are completely unaware of it. He compares it to the world in the Matrix, Alice in Wonderland, and many other popular stories where everything you see is an illusion. It's an interesting explanation for the terrible things that happen to good Christians, but I don't buy it. I take personal responsibility for all the "Hell" in my life. Most of the bad that has happened in my life has been because I haven't been following the guidance of Christ. I have a will. God speaks loudly enough most days if I'm paying attention.

Mandatory Reading For ALL Christians

I think this book along with the beliefs held by the author will revolutionize Christianity from the soft, goody two shoe, Jesus pin wearing, bible toting, non-impact having, Christians to vibrant real people of faith who love God no matter the cost and love others enough to be real. It could possibly be the greatest work (along with Wild at Heart) since Luther's reformation. Please read with an open heart. More importantly listen how God feels about what Eldrege is saying. Onward Christian Soldiers!

Stirs the heart

Hearing this via Audible is my second time through the book. The narrator starts out a little monotone but really warms up to the subject very quickly. I have really enjoyed hearing this during my commute and will look forward to listening again and again. One interesting thing about the recording... they left in two flubs early in the program. The reader so flawlessly moves into the second take, the editors didn't notice and take it out!

Cuts through the red-tape

Mr. Eldredge really hits those topics that I've been struggling with in ny journey towards faith. His references towards movies and literature such as The Matrix, The Wizard of Oz, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion King, and dozens of others really help to bring home his points and it sure doesn't hurt that every reference he mentioned were some of my personal favorites.
The main thing is that he breaks through all the 'religious' red-tape to get to the 'heart' of the matter
I give this book (and audio book) my highest recommendation.

Easy Listen, But Challenging

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The book really challenges you to listen to what God is doing instead of what the enemy is doing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Waking the Dead?

The concept that my heart is good is something I'd like to consider more and more.

Which character – as performed by Kelly Dolan – was your favorite?

The read was enjoyable and engaging. Not dry at all...really enjoyed the narration.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

A little too much to digest in one sitting, but I kept coming back to it again and again.

Excellent

I was leary of listening to another christian book for fear that it might be slow and boring but not this one! It was fresh, fast and inspiring. The author challenged me again and again to renew my faith and see my life as a journey of faith. I will listen to this again.
