Editorial reviews

Alex Jennings's delivery is more like a skilled recitation than a narration. Jennings understands the structure of the Psalms as shaped in the well-known language of the King James Bible. Every word is delivered crisply, and his voice is dignified and always respectful. Transitions are bridged with brief excerpts of English choral music from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The combination is beautiful, meditative, and unified.

Publisher's summary

The 150 Psalms contain some of the most inspiring lines in the Old Testament: Psalm 23 "The Lord is My Shepherd" and Psalm 121 "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills". Yet few know them as a set, and this recording, in Alex Jennings' clear performance, allows us to consider them as a whole. They are not all uplifting and comfortable. Many involve darker sentiments of revenge or punishment; many appear to be by David or about David; others are To the chief Musician upon Gittith. Their variety is part of their strength and their power, especially in the magisterial language of the King James Bible used here. They are presented with English choral music from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The absolute best version of Psalms!

Where does The Psalms rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This ranks #1 among my favorites!

What other book might you compare The Psalms to and why?

No other book really compares to this one. It is finely performed with calming and lovely selections of music. It is the KJB, which is most beautiful.

Which character – as performed by Alex Jennings – was your favorite?

Mr. Jennings does a superb job, I love his rendering.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. This is a book I like to listen to in bed at night as I drift off to sleep.

Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this book with a wonderful narrator. It could not be better!

99.999% perfect

I have listened to 10 or more versions of the Psalms. This and Theodore Bikel are two of the very best. Their voices are exceptionally good, not overdone, not dramatized in silly ways, and just solidly easy to listen to.

My favorite narration of the Psalms

I really like the musical interludes and find the narration expressive and thoughtful.

I do wish the recording was split into more chapters so that it is easier to find specific Psalms.

It Was Extremely Beautiful!

I love the poetic language of the Psalms. The voice acting was greatly done. The musical interludes were beautiful and inspired me to listen to hymns. I definitely recommend this rendition of the Psalms. It was greatly done!

Great!!!

I enjoyed listening to the British guy who narrated this. Really made the words come alive! I was able to picture and focus on the psalms like I never have before. Plus, every few psalms part of a beautiful choir hymn plays! I listened to this off and on all day today, and probably will listen to the whole thing again tomorrow! I loved having it on in the background. One thing I gleaned today was that David continually talks about his enemies, so maybe it is a good idea to be aware of who my enemies really and to pray, as David did, for protection and help. Also, praise was another theme which repeats throughout the psalms. I look forward to learning more as I keep listening!

psalms

I never understood psalms just by reading chapters. Listening to all opened my eyes.
