Publisher's summary

It is estimated that more than 20 million Americans have practiced some form of yoga, yet almost none of them have heard of yoga's early teachers or their insights. While we are familiar with yoga's physical benefits, the original purpose of yoga as a path to inner freedom and enlightenment is embodied by only a few students in the West. Handed down to us throughout the past 5,000 years, the mental and spiritual disciplines of this complete philosophy for living are in danger of vanishing forever.

Now yoga scholar Georg Feuerstein immerses you in The Lost Teachings of Yoga, the first comprehensive audio curriculum about yoga's original spiritual wisdom and practices. A leading scholar and practitioner of yoga in the West for more than 30 years, Feuerstein introduces you to the wonders beyond yoga's postures and breathing techniques, and points the way to the inner strength and mental peace that is yoga's first objective. Taught by Feuerstein himself, this full 12-session, seven-hour course reveals the true history of yoga, the gifted masters who brought it to the West, its many branches and the rich fruit they yield, yoga's virtues and disciplines that flower into enlightenment, subtle anatomy and the energy of prana or life force, the origins of asanas, and much more. Georg Feuerstein has said that today in the West, we need yoga more than ever. Not simply because we want to develop strong, flexible bodies, but because yoga's vast spiritual heritage can help us uncover the deeper purpose of life. Discover for yourself yoga's ultimate achievement and your foundation for a more effective daily practice with The Lost Teachings of Yoga.

Thank you Georg for writing this book.

Any additional comments?

I am still on the first chapter but so thrilled to find such a real, authentic book that finally reveals the truth and mystery about Yoga, that I had to share my excitement.... if you are ready to really understand the spiritual side of Yoga, not the typical, superficial, western version, this is the book!

An excellent overview description of the depth teachings of yoga

Georg Feurstein distills into a nicely complete and compelling overview of the depth teachings of the yoga as passed down from yoga traditions from India. His voice and format is expressive of a yogis equanimity and purpose in the love of the rich tools yoga offers to humanity for anyone wishing to practice the yogic path. I believe most who have an attraction to yoga and some sense of conscious awakening will be inspired to practice deeper toward greater awakening. At least that's been my experience here with this work. I especially enjoyed his words on Tantric Yoga.

a must for anyone interested in yoga

Georg Feurestein introduces fundamental aspects of traditional yogic wisdom in an accessible way. He beautifully illustrates how this ancient wisdom is still absolutely applicable to living meaningfully in modern times.

Good analysis

This is a good book for getting under the superficial skin of western yoga. Good analogies. I don't much care for integration of western style psychology (addiction) in terms of yoga for treatment, because I feel Eastern philosophy should be viewed from an Eastern context and not integrated. But, overall, very masterful and scholarly.

Insights abound

Even though I'm familiar with a lot of the concepts Georg speaks about, I found myself continually saying "hmm that's really interesting" over and over again. And because Georg reads his own book, he's able to transform the audio book into what feels like a seminar or presentation on yoga.
