Publisher's summary

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," and "a fountain of life" - the foundation on which all wisdom rests, as well as the source from whence it emanates.

Upon a principle so vastly important, all the subtle malignity of Satan has been directed, if possible to mislead the very elect; while the ungodly and impenitent fall under his devices.

To the mind enlightened by divine truth, the difference between a filial fear of offending God and the dread of punishment is very plain. Still, by the devil's sophistry, some of the most pious Christians have been puzzled and bewildered. Bunyan was not ignorant of Satan's devices, and he has roused the energies of his powerful mind, guided by divine truth, to render this important doctrine so clear and easy to be understood, that the believer may not err.

Wonderful book, a must for believers!

This book teaches you the value of the fear of God. It is probably one of the most important books I read this year. I would highly recommend it for any believer if you want to strengthen your relationship with the Lord.

So much Truth!

John Bunyan was truly a man who earnestly sought the heart of God. His deep and spiritual insights are so inspiring, even though he lived 500 years ago.

I feel this book has been so vital during this Covid period. So much fear and doubt has paralysed so many people and we are seeing much fruit from this. The biggest being the loss of income for so many people.

The essence of this book, I believe is also very much the essence of God and His Word. Either we choose to embrace Him and His Word as truth, living in faith and walking in His promises - Lifting our eyes to Him, seeking His Kingdom and Righteousness First, or falling into disgruntlement, dissatisfaction and turning our backs on Him. We can either strive in our own strength - which usually leads to the above or we can walk in His strength, knowing He is Sovereign and in control.

Excellent Book

Gave me a better explanation of "the fear of God" (more a respect & wanting to be good to make your parents proud).

Great book on fearing God

I enjoyed how Bunyan goes through the whole Bible and details what it means to fear God. God is wonderful and He desires our praise for how He relates to us.

Poor

I was very disappointed in the content of this audio. I love listening to most Christian audios but not this one. The fear of GOD should be an see or reverence of GOD, not a dread or trembling.

No trace of 'Fear' left behind

For those who want to dig deep into the "Fear of God," as it is theologically explained in the Bible, this is the book to read. Obviously, as a book that was written back in the 1600s, it should come as no surprise there is some old language in the book, along with the use of the KJV translation. But the content itself is rich with DEEP study and has more than enough content to tickle one's theological brain. The legendary John Bunyan, author of "Pilgrim's Progress," leaves no rock upturned in his search to wring out "Fear" as it's understood throughout the ENTIRE Bible. And as long as you're paying attention closely (which admittedly is not always easy to do if you're impassively listening to it), you will be treated to a very thorough and edifying treatment of this concept. I would argue, in fact, that there is not a more complete study of the "Fear of God" out there than this book.

The narration is good, but not great, which is ultimately not Jim Denison's fault, as it can be hard to read from a book that's of the older tradition. If someone gave this a more modern update, in as far as the Bible translation being used and more current language , that would be amazing. However, in the meantime, there is so much about this book to be enjoyed and to think on. I enjoyed it very much.

They lied about the Puritans

This book is a comfort not a club. The author seeks to serve his readers and comfort or warn not to gloat or glower over them. there is no reason that an educated 21st century American, reading with an open mind would not understand and even benefit from this book.
