Publisher's summary

Best-selling author and pastor Dr. John MacArthur reveals one crucial word that revolutionizes what it means to follow Jesus.

Throughout the Bible, followers of Jesus are commanded to submit to Him as their King. They are told to obey and follow, faithfully and without hesitation. Every time Christians utter the word Lord, they make a subtle yet profound declaration - that God is their Master and that they belong to Him. In fact, the Bible describes believers as His slaves. They have been bought with a price and now live for Christ as a people for His own possession.

But go into most churches today, even flip through most Bible translations, and you won’t see or hear the word slave anywhere. That’s because it has been lost in translation. In this gripping book, Dr. John MacArthur uses deep Bible teaching and historical evaluation to expertly uncover the one forgotten word that restores the Bible’s definition of true Christian freedom.

What I expect from MacArthur

The basic premise of the book, that the word slave is somewhat mistranslated as servant is nothing new. But it does present a good background and explanation of what slave and slavery meant back in the day the bible was written.

The book also is used as a platform for MacArthur to make the case for Calvinism and it does present the case for the concept of Calvin’s TULIP very well and is backed up with appropriate bible verses etc. The argument for/against Calvinism is old and interesting and certainly one that Christians can have without coming to blows. I can appreciate this books presentation on the idea.

Narration Poor

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

Bottom line: I like John MacArthur as a public speaker. His written material is very good as is his public ministry. However, he is not a narrator for audio books. A good narrator makes or breaks an audio book. The material in the book was very much affected by this. I'm sure there's more good material in his book but I couldn't listen past the second chapter. I endured the first chapter. I would have been better served buying a hard-copy of the book. This should have been narrated by a pro like Grover Gardner.

John's reading of his own book was stilted and lacked the deep insightful tone of someone like Grover Gardner (I'm amazed at Gardner's ability). One might say - how can this be, after all John's reading his own book? But the reality is his style is suited for public speaking and he cannot transfer over from his public speaking style that has no doubt developed over many years. He's a gifted public speaker -- not an audio book narrator. Again, if this were narrated by Grover Gardner or someone similar I suspect I'd have gone over the book several times by now. It tried to focus on the material but the reading was painful ---- sorry John, you're a great Christian and your ministry is top-notch but.....

Needed in 21st Century Christianity!

Very biblical and powerful ... the truths contained in this book are straight from the Bible and I believe are in much need of being heard by those who claim the name of Christ, especially in the US.

Count the Cost

Where does Slave rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Slave is by far ranks among the top of the list for audiobooks. I respect the author John MacArthur for teaching the Word of God.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Slave?

The most memorable moments of "Slave" gives the reader a clear picture to why Jesus died for sinners in the first place. As a sinner, the blood of Jesus paid for my sins, which is a debt that I cannot ever repay. In other words, I am a "Slave" to the Lord, who has given me life more abundantly by washing my sins away. Thus, I was born again. He is my Master and I am His Child.

What about John MacArthur’s performance did you like?

MacArthur's performance was great!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes,I could not stop listening to "Slave" and I listened in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

There are so many books on the market today about the Word of God, and each author may have his or her own personal views about the Bible but is it true facts? In my opinion, the Bible has been watered down in so many churches today and MacArthur's book is for real!

Listen to the end - Worth more than the price

Wow. I am glad I read some of the 3-star and lower reviews before buying and listening to this. I understand the contrarian views, which made listening all the more interesting. I think the Bible supports MacArthur's views presented in this book and consider his delving into doctrinal issues essential to fully understand all that being a slave and heir and son mean. You won't be disappointed with this book. It will positively change your life forever.

Legendary Writer

I loved that John MacArthur narrated this. He's got a great voice and a wonderful cadence to his narration. If you want more check out the GTY (Grace to you) App. It's got all his sermons on there. This book covers a topic that a lot of Christians might find offensive but he makes a very cogent explanation of it.
