Publisher's summary

First published in 1992, Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home has become a classic on its eponymous subject. Awarded Christianity Today's Book of the Year award and the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association's Gold Medallion award, Prayer continues to receive widespread acclaim as one of the most thorough and insightful treatments of this central spiritual practice.

Following the structure of his 1.2 million-copy-selling Celebration of Discipline, Prayer explores three spiritual "movements" of prayer: inward, upward, and outward. Within each movement he looks at seven different types of prayer, for a total exploration of 21 separate forms of prayer.

Coming to prayer is like coming home, Foster says: "Nothing feels more right, more like what we are created to be and to do." This accessible, rich, and reliable guide shows how each of the various forms of prayer can move us inward into personal transformation, upward toward intimacy with God, and outward to minister to others.

Great Introduction to Prayer

This was a great introduction to prayer. I have been reading through a bunch of books on prayer for a personal research project and this was the best introduction to methods on prayer that I have found. It is full of actual experience in prayer and not just theory. It took me a little while to get through it because I would have to stop and think about what he was writing for a while and come back to it. Highly recommend

Lots of info

I have listened to this audio book twice. There is so much information I tended to get lost. Maybe I'll get a notepad on the 3rd time.

Deep Thoughts. Take Notes.

If you are looking for a prayer text book that goes beyond the usual "follow the format of the Lord's Prayer," this is for you. Be sure to have a notebook and pen handy and keep your finger near the pause button.

Just What I Needed

This is a comprehensive book on prayer. It is not particularly prescriptive, though it does instruct. Rather, it provides insight into the many different ways in which we can commune with God in prayer. I can’t wait to get a physical copy so I can read it again and underline and write notes within.

Excellent study on prayer

This is the second book I've read by Foster - Celebration of Discipline was the other - very good books - both. I also appreciate the references throughout. I will be using both books for a while. Though I've read them multiple times now, I will be using them for regular reference until I'm well familiar with the practices that are described. For example there are three sections in the book about prayer. Inward prayer, upward prayer and outward prayer. Each has 7 kinds of prayer that go in respective categories. I want to recall and describe each one. I know half of them without looking. Means there is still more to learn.

Great book that provides practical advice

Prayer can, even to strong believers, feel like something that is accessible only to the select few. This book is an antidote to this way of thinking. Prayer is for everyone. This book provides good counsel as to how the reader can improve his or her prayer life.

A Classic Showing its Age

The book has been around for years and still provides a good primer on the depth and breadth of prayer. It is generally balanced and ecumenical but does lean toward pietism and sometimes, magical examples of prayer, though not mystical in the classic sense.

Life changing

The principles of prayer and clear explanations and examples are dynamic. This book calls and challenges us to practical and faith-filled steps closer to the heart of God through prayer. This book will be a staple for me...I will return again and again as I endeavor to grow in love of God and humble service of Him.

The reader is very easy and inviting to listen to as well.
