Publisher's summary

Over the last 100-plus years the Pentecostal-Charismatic church has witnessed miraculous conversions.

From the Azusa Street Revival, which began in 1906, a movement has grown to bring more people to Jesus than any other movement in history. While secularism continues to be on the rise in today's society, many areas of the world still experience church growth, thanks to Pentecostal-Charismatic Christians.

But the Pentecostal-Charismatic church is also plagued with sexual immorality, financial corruption, doctrinal error, personal flakiness, spiritual gullibility, prophetic abuse, and more. In many ways the state of the church today is not too different from how it was long ago in Corinth. To make matters worse, the church hides these acts under the cloak of liberty in the Holy Spirit.

Michael Brown sounds a wake-up call to the church and addresses some of the most glaring problems, from inaccurate prophetic words that obscure true ones to ministries using scripturally armed marketing techniques in order to manipulate believers into giving.

Brown shows us why we must clean up house so the church can grow, flourish, and fulfill God's kingdom purposes.

A Book We Charismatics Desperately Need

I began learning about and experiencing the ways of the Holy Spirit in college and it completely changed my life. But after spending some time in the movement, I found myself confused about many different things. I heard many strange and unbiblical theological statements and found that people far too often let experience write their understanding of God. Over the years I’ve actually felt some of this get even worse.

I never stopped believing in the Holy Spirit’s power and I’ve continued to try to practice and teach it as a pastor, but I decided to do so by immersing myself in the Scriptures and testing the people I was learning from. After years of learning, I even started writing a book on the subject.

All of that being said, this is hands down a book I give a 5 star review to. While loving the charismatic side of the church just as much as I do, Brown calls us all to account with a deep study of the Scriptures. I have felt nervous as of late with many of the charismatic books I’ve seen, but this one has encouraged me like few on the topic have over the years.

I’d consider it a must read for any charismatic, as well as for anyone who has been turned off by charismatics. Brown’s words will help God convict and clean us up if we’re willing to listen.

Playing with Fire is Serious

Michael Brown has written a great book concerning the abuse of God's anointing. He has diplomatically stated, and gave apology for the abuse directed to those that use the abuse to deny the working and ministry of Holy Spirit.

Memorable parts are all those that refer to the reason God has poured out His Spirit, that is for Him to be glorified through the Son, who sent Holy Spirit.

As a personal acquaintance of Brown, I can attest to to the humility, yet boldness in this book. I can attest to his academics and most of all to his loyalty to the Word of God.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is questioning the gifts of the Spirit as well as those believing they are no longer in use.

I would like to finally add the caution to those who are on the John Mcarthur side of the spectrum and to those abusing the gifts of Holy Spirit, to read/listen with humility as blaspheme of Holy Spirit is serious and eternity is at stake.

I believe I missed all the Scriptural Citations...

Good narration, I think it's a shame that Mr Brown missed his points for me. No Citations for verification of the Continuationests beliefs are related, just wanted to express that I missed his attempt to persuade anyone or inform anyone of what they believe and why they believe it other than "It's in there"

Please pastors read it!

This book will bring comfort to those who has been burnt by "charismatic" abuse. It will also help pastors staying on track themselves; knowing how to install healthy bounderies as well as modeling a healthy charismatic life. One day we will all individually stand at judgment seat of Christ to be judged. This book can surely help us all to be more ready for that day.

Biblical Support for Truth while Exposing The False

If you, like me, agree that the gifts of the Spirit are still for Believers today, or maybe you aren’t sure, but you are confused why there seems to be so much fraud and manipulation in some of the Charismatic leadership, this book is for you. Dr. Brown does a fantastic job of holding accountable that which doesn’t honor The Lord, while speaking to the truth available to those who will trust the scripture’s teaching for the gifts available to us still today. This is a must “read” for all in the Christian world, regardless of what you believe about the current availability of the spiritual gifts for Jesus’ followers today.

A Helpful and Necessary Read for All Denominations

I'm so grateful for Dr. Brown's insight on the the struggles of the Charismatic Church. His loving correction actually produces faith, and a greater love for God and His Word. I would recommend this to all believers as a Biblical and applicable source.

Amazing outlook

Loved the book and read or rather listened to it multiple times. Answered a lot of the ugliness that kept me in the Cessationism camp for a very long time. This book, along with Dr Brown's debates on Cessationism, brought me out of it. Now I believe in Continuationism.

Yes, I have to agree that a lot of people choose to believe Cessationism is due to bad experiences, and then you have the extremist Continuationism that goes over board with little to no oversight.

Every Christian should read this book!

A must read for every Christian, this is one of the best books I have read in a while about what some charismatics have been experiencing but could not put into words. Thank you Dr. Michael Brown!
