Publisher's summary

The text of the books contained in The New American Bible is a completely new translation throughout. From the original and the oldest available texts of the sacred books, it aims to convey as directly as possible the thought and individual style of the inspired writers. The better understanding of Hebrew and Greek, the steady development of the science of textual criticism, and the fruit of patient study since the time of St. Jerome, have allowed the translators and editors in their use of all available materials to approach more closely than ever before the sense of what the sacred authors actually wrote.

The New American Bible has accomplished this in response to the need of the church in America today. It is the achievement of some 50 biblical scholars, the greater number of whom, though not all, are Catholics. In particular, the editors-in-chief have devoted 25 years to this work. The collaboration of scholars who are not Catholic fulfills the directive of the Second Vatican Council, not only that "correct translations be made into different languages especially from the original texts of the sacred books", but that, "with the approval of the church authority, these translations be produced in cooperation with separated brothers" so that "all Christians may be able to use them".

Good narration

This is a good translation of the New Testament, and it is the one used in Catholic liturgies in the USA, which makes it especially useful to me.

The narration is excellent: pace, expressiveness.

There are two drawbacks. Audible inhalations detract from the quality of the narration, and section headings are read along with the biblical text. I find the latter to be especially distracting.

Clear sound, good pace for listening and following

Where does New American Bible rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of my favorites due to the clarity of sound, the pacing, and the sub-headings that are spoken as you move from one section to another.

What about Buck Ford’s performance did you like?

Terrific, clear sound that allows focus on what is being said. His voice doesn't get in the way like some narrators.

A Real Powerful #1 Bestseller!!!

What made the experience of listening to New American Bible the most enjoyable?

I always wanted to read the Bible, but I have difficulty reading it. I had a Stroke 18 years ago and I don't remember what I read a minute ago. This reading to me, I remember....funny isn't it, but it is true.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jesus

Which scene was your favorite?

I have not gotten read, but the Nativity is my favorite as well as the death and resurection.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

I will listen to it over and over again.

Very good, but junky transitions

Get rid of the chapter & section headings, clunky music & "change CD" instructions, and this audio book is outstanding!

Awkwardly cut

Would you recommend New American Bible to your friends? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this version. This would be much improved if you could easily reference passages. I accidentally hit back a couple of times and the recording backed up to the beginning of the book - sometimes an hour's worth of listening. Recording is very inflexible.

Any additional comments?

This is the first time I read the New American Bible version. I guess I just prefer the King James rendition.

Excellant

If you could sum up New American Bible in three words, what would they be?

Excellant to listen to

Who was your favorite character and why?

The narrator has a great sounding voice and makes it very interesting to listen to.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Nothing he does an outstanding job.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I couldn't because it's too long, although I think it could have been combined into 7 audio books instead of 14.

Any additional comments?

This audio volume could be better if there was a dictionary section included as in the St. Joseph's bible. Some people might not understand some terms used.
