Publisher's summary

Of the many recent books on the historical Jesus, none has explored what the latest biblical scholarship means for personal faith. Now, in Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, Marcus Borg addresses the yearnings of those who want a fully contemporary faith that welcomes rather than oppresses our critical intelligence and openness to the best of historical scholarship. Borg shows how a rigorous examination of historical findings can lead to a new faith in Christ, one that is critical and, at the same time, sustaining.

Drawing on his own journey from a naïve, unquestioning belief in Christ through collegiate skepticism to a mature and contemporary Christian faith, Borg illustrates how an understanding of the historical Jesus can actually lead to a more authentic Christian life - one not rooted in creed or dogma, but in a life of spiritual challenge, compassion, and community.

In straightforward, accessible prose, Borg looks at the major findings of modern Jesus scholarship from the perspective of faith, bringing alive the many levels of Jesus's character: spirit person, teacher of alternative wisdom, social prophet, and movement founder. He also reexamines the major stories of the Old Testament vital to an authentic understanding of Jesus, showing how an enriched understanding of these stories can uncover new truths and new pathways to faith.

first thing he did was deny Christ's deity.

when he opened up to say that he was a professor of the Bible secular University I was skeptical but open minded.But...the first thing he did was deny Christ's deity. later on he goes into homosexuality and states that it's no longer an issue with God and then he throws in universal healthcare as if God's plan to save the world comes through government welfare programs. unfortunately he sounds like every brainwashing secular professor, and I really feel sadness for this guy. God open his eyes.

Terrific book - Find a different narrator.

The narration was robotic. There was a repetitive progression of tones that was unrelated to the story - his voice designed to meet some imagined mechanical standard - totally divorced from the material. Borg writes with skill, passion and a command of history and translation. The story is engaging. The narration made it very difficult to listen for even 20 minutes at a time. Get the Kindle version or the book of you can't find another narrator.

Great content, distracting narration

The content of the book is transformational. The narration was distracting. It sounded like it was computer-generated—too perfect and completely lacking in soul. A lot of the message is lost because of this. There is a complete mismatch between the words and the voice of the one delivering them. I plan to get the print version and read it again.

Compelling Contemporary Scholarship

This thoughtful, heartfelt revisionist offering of the meaning of
Jesus within Christian tradition offers in-depth Biblical knowledge
juxtaposed with opportunities for contemporary application.
Mr. Borg maintains that Jesus was/is a subversive; I suggest that
Mr. Borg was/is as well, and wonderfully so.

Well read by Adam Vernier. A minor issue with textual numbering
of chapters, but everything worked well, allowing re-winds, and
pauses. This was a great experience.

Mostly allegorical in scope

The author seems to see Jesus as more than allegory than he truly was. I found this book to be heretical in most of its context, but I did gain a deeper understanding of the Lutheran faith. Which applies to my husband. The author doesn’t seem to actually understand the nature of the text and the verbiage behind the text as he distorted so many basic theology precepts. This book is not for the faint of heart or for somebody who does not know their Bible very very well. if you were a new believer, I would steer you in a completely different direction.

For those who need to rethink Jesus

This book so helps with the deconstruction and the reconstruction for believers in the 21st-century.

Articulated what I have been feeling for years.

Articulated what I have been feeling for years. Brings academic, scholarly, and historical research to a subject that is too often weighed down with church dogma or doctrine, so much so the individual is told not to think for themselves but to believe only what they are told to believe. The one-star review comments are proof of this. This book has brought me closer to Jesus and to God.

Making Sense of Jesus and Christianity

I’ve struggled for years about the message and claims that churches give about Jesus. There seemed to be dichotomies with what Jesus said and what churches say that Jesus said. This book wonderfully cleared the confusion for me and gave true meaning to Biblical messages.
