Publisher's summary

The Bhagavad Gita is a gem so precious in India's spiritual treasury that many regard it not as a volume of sacred verse, but as a living manifestation of the Divine. In the summer of 1974, inside a balmy Boulder, Colorado, warehouse that served as a main hall of a fledgling Naropa Institute, some say a minor miracle occured: The reawakening of the Gita's living presence, as it unfolded in a series of wisdom teachings led by Ram Dass. With Love, Service, Devotion, and the Ultimate Surrender, you are invited to experience these legendary gatherings.

Oh....Ram Das!

My favorite listen during my recent battle with the flu was 12 hrs of Ram Das explaining the Bhagavad Gita. (Recorded in 1974) I like the part in the Gita where Ram Das and Timothy Leary get fired from Harvard for ordering a half million dollars of LSD for research. Feeling much better now- Namaste, Granmonkie

Bhagavad Gita for Everyone

Recorded in 1974, this book provides a fascinating look back at Ram Dass, and it serves to show us why he was, and still is, such a popular spiritual leader. His tone is casual, he spins stories as though he was hanging out with a group of friends at a cafe (or even a bar), and he gently guides the listener through many of the most important messages in the Gita, a book that can be pretty intimidating at best. This is one of the finest spiritual pieces I ever did hear (or read).

Wow!!! An American mystic.

Ram Dass delivers from his heart the path to Consciousness, God and Love. Having followed a spiritual journey for many years it was delightful to find in a 1974 recording a history that somewhat parallels my journey and it's many twists and turns. In 1974 I would have thought he was out to lunch, not knowing that in 2011 I would love to be lunching with him discussing this path. I especially love knowing that he simply taught and was not invested in Ego's rewards or worried about what the future would bring. This is a treasure, read in his own young, strong voice. Namaste

Didn't really resonate with me

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoy listening to Ram Dass tell stories. He is a wonderful storyteller, full of humor and amazing life experiences. However, many of his spiritual experiences involved the use of psychedelic drugs. Due to my background and history, I am predisposed to discount such experiences. For those of you who do not suffer from this hang-up, it's a very amusing read.

Would you recommend Love, Service, Devotion, and the Ultimate Surrender to your friends? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this book because it simply did not resonate with me. I am not very interested in metaphysics, and I am very uninterested in stories where drugs play a central theme. I do not believe in the transformative power of LSD, and I'm not very interested in that, anyway. I am much more interested in "ordinary" human experience and human relationships.

What aspect of Ram Dass’s performance would you have changed?

Ram Dass is a well-loved and venerable author and historian. If you love Ram Dass, you will love this book.

Was Love, Service, Devotion, and the Ultimate Surrender worth the listening time?

The book was entertaining, but I did feel that the discussion of more metaphysical matters were uninteresting.

Any additional comments?

A great book for people who love Ram Dass and his funny stories. I did not find it particularly illuminating, and I wish I had used my credit to purchase something else.

Awful sound quality.

Rambling talk. Not really so much about the Bhagavad Gita but still lovely. Sound quality so poor. Shame on you audible.

Fantastic

This is an amazing audiobook of Ram Dass' lectures at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado back in the late 70s. It is a mix of Buddhist teaching, Hindu teachings and Christian teachings. Fantastic, but be warned, Ram Dass was a Harvard Professor with Timothy Leary and talks quite a bit about his experiences with psychedelics.
