Publisher's Summary

The Bible is the written Word of God, and it is treasured by many. But it is also an ancient book about people and cultures very different than us. Thus, while we know we should read it, many of us have a hard time understanding the Bible. In this updated edition of Knowing Scripture, R. C. Sproul helps us dig out the meaning of Scripture for ourselves. The author says, "The theme of this book is not how to read the Bible but how to study the Bible." He presents in simple, basic terms a commonsense approach to studying Scripture and gives eleven practical guidelines for biblical interpretation and applying what we learn.
With a minimum of technical jargon, Sproul tackles some of the knotty questions regarding differences of interpreting the Bible, including:

Discovering the meanings of biblical words

Understanding Hebrew poetry, proverbs and parables

Approaching historical and didactic passages

Being careful with predictive prophecy

Discerning how culture conditions the Bible

Choosing and using Bible translations, commentaries, Bible software and other helps.

Bible Study Primer

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a great book, easy to listen to, yet full of precious instruction for solid Bible study. I recommend this to everyone serious about reading the bible either for or against it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Knowing Scripture?

The rules for 'private interpretation' and 'implicit statements interpreted by explicit statements' were very eye opening and extremely helpful in finding what the author of the bible meant to communicate. "Truth is not subjective, but objective!"

What about Rob Dean’s performance did you like?

the reader performed his job well. Present, but not distracting...

Solid teaching from a great teacher

Would you listen to Knowing Scripture again? Why?

The amount and depth of the solid theology in all of R.C. Sproul's books never cease to amaze me. I would always say yes I will probably listen again, because there is so much depth to his teaching, you can never get it all in one trip through his books.

Any additional comments?

R.C. Sproul is a powerfully gifted teacher, that breaks down the subject matter in such a way that anyone can understand, and grow from it. You could be the newest Christian, or a seasoned pastor, and gain from his knowledge, and adherence to the Bible.
