Publisher's summary

In recent years, Christians everywhere are rediscovering the Jewish roots of their faith. Every year at Easter time, many believers now celebrate Passover meals (known as Seders) seeking to understand exactly what happened at Jesus' final Passover, the night before he was crucified. Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as:

  • What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah?
  • What was Jesus' purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover?
  • And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, "This is my body...This is my blood"?

To answer these questions, Pitre explores ancient Jewish beliefs about the Passover of the Messiah, the miraculous manna from heaven, and the mysterious Bread of the Presence. As he shows, these three keys - the Passover, the manna, and the Bread of the Presence - have the power to unlock the original meaning of the Eucharistic words of Jesus. Along the way, Pitre also explains how Jesus united the Last Supper to his death on Good Friday and his Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Inspiring and informative, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist is a groundbreaking work that is sure to illuminate one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith: the mystery of Jesus' presence in "the breaking of the bread".

Fascinating insights

I couldn't stop listening to this well written overview of the Jewish roots of the Eucharist.
Pitre explains wonderfully not only how the Passover Seder ties into our understanding of the Last Supper but also how Jewish temple worship and traditional rabbinic commentaries can illuminate for us, what Christ's followers saw and heard within the actions and teachings of Jesus.

I highly recommend this book. I have just listened to Scott Hahn's "The Fourth Cup" and enjoyed it as well but of the two, "Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist" has significantly more depth.

Great! More of what I expected.

Great study!
If I had lived in the Old Testament age, I would have liked to be able to see and revere the bread of the presence, the mana and all the sacred gifts the Lord placed for his people. Likewise as I reflect on God's plan of salvation for humanity written all over the OT and NT, my humble human mind wants to comprehend His great love that brought Him to continuously give us His only son in the bread and blood, all the blood of sufferings and sins absorbed in our Lord Jesus Christ, "...blood and water which gushed forth from the heart of Jesus as a fountain of mercy for us ...". I have read some of the reviews, positive and negative and I can only think on what a Gift our Jewish ancestors had and what a great Gift, we have now.

I had written the above in Amazon when I was half thru with the book, now I just finished it and can’t wait to go over it again. Highly recommended. It is a great source for those who long to know more of God’s plan/love for us and seeing this love moving all thru the Jewish roots in the OT, and reappearing thru the NT.

Thanks be to God!

If you think you understand the Eucharist/Lord’s Supper, think again. Reading this book, or listening to audio version, will completely blow your understanding wide open. I am stunned. I am a new Catholic and what compelled me was Jesus’ Bread of Life discourse in John 6. I had to find a church with this correct, literal teaching that the bread and wine do not represent Jesus’ body and blood, they ARE his body and blood. This only confirms my choice. Thanks be to God!

Best book ever. So much ignorance until now on my side.

This book explain at the end the devotion and important to the Blessed Sacrament. Also, explain perfectly why Jesus asked Saint Pierina Dimichelly to pray the Chaplet to his face and to keep the devotion on this days to the Holy Face as Jesus asked her. In times of different forms of Communism this is a great book to renew our faith and knowledge. I can’t thank enough my Priest Father Justin for bringing up the book at mass homily.

From a Lay Eucharistic Minister's Point of View

As a Lay Eucharistic Minister in our church, this audible book kept me listening intently through out. In fact, because of the constant reference to scripture, I am purchasing the book as a reference.
