Publisher's summary

For centuries, the role of women in the Church has been a subdued one, with many limitations. The time has come, argues Sarah Bessey-who has been called an "accidental grassroots voice for postmodern and progressive evangelical women"- to take a new look at Scripture and challenge old assumptions. In Jesus Feminist, Bessey shares her spiritual journey, which ranges from growing up in a post–gender-debate home to learning about the worldwide struggles of women and the obstacles even a well-meaning church can pose. Through disarmingly intimate storytelling, she tells how she grew to understand the story of God and the vastness of his work through women. Never one to shy away from the hard questions, Bessey engages critically with Scripture and church practices that are often used against full equality and shares how following Jesus made a feminist out of her.Filled with beauty, hard truth, and brave vulnerability, Jesus Feminist urges the Church to stop asking "man or woman" as a qualification for ministry and to start helping everyone find freedom in the fullness, hope, glory, and work of Christ.

Love the book; HATE the reader.

I own this book and purchased the audiobook to re-read it while driving for work. I so wish the author had read this. The woman who does read it is annoying to listen to and made me sad I wasted a credit on it. Buy and read the book on your own.

A healing balm for the wounds of Christian women

I really enjoyed this book and I even listened to certain chapters twice. The narrator was very annoying and in the beginning of the book it seemed like she was trying to sound like a Victorian period actress.

A little too "fru-fru" for me

While I absolutely support the message of mutuality and believe it is absolutely necessary if the church is going to flourish in the future, I am a "meat and potatoes" kinda Bible student, so the author's delivery was too flowery for me.

Kind but firm

I wanted someone to validate me as a feminist, to be angry and smash the patriarchy with me and Jesus. But this book is so much more than that. It is about how to be all that we are called to be as daughters and wives and servants of Jesus, and to stand up for what is right with love. It was so tender I was kind of "eww" at first but the prose began to resonate with me more and more as I listened.

A must read for ALL!

I love the tone of the book that uplifts and provides clearer information about how women are portrayed, spoken of and to, and implications of texts in the Bible regarding women. The last chapter is beautiful and reminds all the power of us together and doing our part. I loved this book and it soothed my soul.

Absolutely necessary!

I was so thrilled to hear about this book and even more thrilled to read it. I powered through the audio version laughing, crying and feeling as though someone understood me. As a woman raised in the church I can say without a doubt that this is a book that has been needed for a long time. Sarah is gentle and graceful as she shares what she believes God truly intended for women. I could not recommend this book more highly.

Worth every minute

Settle in and let these words speak to your soul. As they are told, a beautiful story will unfold within you, as unique as each individual person listening to or reading this tremendous work.

Empowering!

I had seen the book "Jesus Feminist" pop up occasionally in a group on facebook. I tend to shy away from the word "Feminist" because of the negative way it is portrayed by some extremists (like the ones who don't like identifying as "female" or "women" because "male" and "men" are contained in the words)--but since it was free with my first month of Audible, I decided to go ahead and get it! SUCH A GOOD BOOK!!! I didn't agree with everything she said, but I definitely connected with most of it. I STRONGLY encourage EVERYONE to read it--or Listen to it like I did. I laughed, cried, shouted "AMEN" more than a few times, and finished the book inspired to be a tool for God to lift-up and empower other women to serve however God calls them--whether in the home, in the workplace, in the Church, or some other place.
