Publisher's summary

A gifted storyteller and spiritual director, Father James Martin, SJ, invites listeners to experience the stories of the Gospels in a completely new, vivid, and exciting way to gain a deeper understanding of Jesus. Moving sequentially through the Gospels, considering not only familiar passages but also the "hidden life" of Jesus, the book offers a bold retelling of the life of Christ, faithful to the Christian tradition, while meditating on parts of the narrative that have often escaped notice.

Martin provides personal stories from his own life, the most up-to-date biblical scholarship, and powerful anecdotes from beloved spiritual teachers, and brings the listener along on his own real-life travels through the Holy Land.

Combining the fascinating insights of historical Jesus studies with profound spiritual reflections about the Christ of faith, Martin re-creates the world of first-century Galilee and Judea to usher us into Jesus's life and times and reveal how Jesus speaks to us today. Jesus: A Pilgrimage is an invitation to know Jesus as Father Martin knows him: Messiah and Savior, as well as friend and brother.

I Never Thought I'd Say This, But. . .

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'm recommending this book to anyone of any faith who is interested in spirituality. Following the process of St. Ignatius Loyola, Fr. James Martin (a Jesuit priest) shows us how to pray in a different way. He uses his own experience of prayer, in connection with his one visit to the Holy Land, to teach a very simple but also very exciting way to get beyond the recitation of words to a real understanding of spirituality. For the Catholic reader, this book also will teach how to understand the Church's approach to Sacred Scripture. Fr. Martin reads this book himself, and he is the best one to do it, having lived the experiences he describes. I can't recommend this audiobook enough!

Loved it

When I began I felt like I missed parts because there was so much information so then I realized that I had focus on listening rather than having it as "background" By the end I was wanting more and didn't want it to end. It made me think and changed my perspective on a lot of the stories I grew up hearing. I would recommend to anyone who doesn't feel like it's possible to "know" Jesus. This book changed my mind

Visiting the Holy Land with James and Jesus

Listening to this book I felt like I was there on pilgrimage with James Martin and his friend and fellow priest George. I felt the broiling heat of the sun and the cool breezes from the Sea of Galilee. I could sense the occasional mundane sites with their cheap trinkets being sold to bored tourists claiming some Biblical event may have happened there. But I could also hear the thunder and the roar of the waves sinking the boat as Jesus crossed the sea and I could hear His voice as He stood and calmed the sea. I could hear Him speak as He preached to the people sitting in a simple fishing boat at a natural amphitheater at the Sea of Galilee. I almost shivered from touching the cold stone slab on which the dead body of Jesus was prepared for burial. Most important, I could sense the presence of Jesus healing at the pool of Bethsaida and multiplying the loaves to feed the multitude and rise from His tomb to speak once again to Peter, Mary Magdalene, James Martin, and me.

Highly Recommend

What did you love best about Jesus?

Fr. James Martin is a gifted (and blessed) teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed his explanation of the story of Jesus.

Have you listened to any of James Martin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to both Between Heaven and Mirth and The Lives of the Saints. This book is as compelling and enjoyable.

Great book

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. It made me feel like I was on pilgrimage with them and made me realize that I am not spending enough time finding "my Jesus."

Jesus by James Martin SJ

This was an exceptionally well written book. James Martin wove together his pilgrimage experiences, his scholarly scripture insights and his personal relationship with Jesus. His reading of his own book added a personal dimension. I could hardly wait to get to the next chapter.

Not Martin's best work..

Would you ever listen to anything by James Martin again?

I like Martin, but this book was written as if to inflate the author's ego. He said he didn't want to write a book about him and the details of his trip that would be as boring as describing one's trip to the drug store. The rest of the book is just that sadly :(

What didn’t you like about James Martin’s performance?

His performance was good, but the content was subpar.

Any additional comments?

Skip this and read his Jesuit's Guide to Almost Everything instead.
