Publisher's summary

The classic story of a family's pilgrimage into the Orthodox Church.

Veiled in the smoke of incense, the Eastern Orthodox Church has long been an enigma to the Western world. Yet, as Frederica Mathewes-Green discovered, it is a vital, living faith, rich in ritual beauty and steadfast in integrity. Utilizing the framework of the Orthodox calendar, Mathewes-Green chronicles a year in the life of her small Orthodox mission church, eloquently illustrating the joys and blessings an ancient faith can bring to the worshipers of today.

Great intro to Orthodoxy

Wonderful book for a Protestant seeker like myself. Provides a different angle than just theology. My only complaint is the audio of the book. I like it when authors read their own books, but in this case, as in another book by the same author, she needs a compressor on her voice to help even out her quiet moments and her louder moments. She frequently drops into quiet "vocal fry," which is great, but requires me to crank the volume, only to be blasted when she speaks more loudly. But don't let that stop you from enjoying this excellent book.

Wonderful

A gentle, warm and accessible introduction to a faith that is so deep and rich it would take multiple lifetimes to begin to realize a fraction of the wealth it offers. The author has done a wonderful job of giving a true taste of the height and breadth of the faith. I am one of those men of whom she spoke, driven by exhaustive research and conviction to the faith, yet I could not have begun - even 26 years later - to express what she has ad concisely or properly as she has. More could I have done a so with the warmth of spirit found here; it truly conveys how it “feels” to live and grow in the faith. I can not more strongly recommend this book. It is a true blessing.

a little self rightous

Many years ago Frederica Mathewes-Green spoken at an Orthodox women conference is Wisconsin. I was amazed at what she said but a few of my friends where unimpressed. 20 years later I finally listened to her book and was disappointed. As a convert she made it seem as if they were discovering the mysteries of Orthodoxy that the current Orthodox hadn't. Pews and head wraps don't make you Orthodox. Being humble would be a better start. Her self righteousness got to me by the end of the book
