Publisher's Summary

All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him, as the wheel follows the foot of the ox that draws the carriage.
All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.
"He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me," - in those who harbor such thoughts hatred will never cease.
"He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me," - in those who do not harbor such thoughts hatred will cease.
For hatred does not cease by hatred at any time: hatred ceases by love; this is an old rule.

A Good Reading of the Dhammapada

Dhammapada means dhamma = 'doctrine' and pada = 'fool' or 'righteous path'. This is 26 (I think) short essays on how to live a happy or a good life. I've actually never read or listened to this before and I thought it was interesting and good. It's a little repetitve. Still good though.

Austin Vanfleet's performance was very good. He spoke clearly and with a tone one would expect with a book like this.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this honest review.

Good if you're interested in self-mastery

Story rating was technically non-applicable but that isn't one of the options so it gets 5. This is a really short listen but it is so dense it's something you'll have to listen to a few times to absorb. There are so many little nuggets of wisdom and it'd be impossible to remember them all in one go. It's also a good insight into the goals and motivations of those that follow/followed Buddha, which is complete control over your body, mind, and soul. I recently watched Journey to the West and couldn't understand why the monk kept refusing the advances of the girl who loved him even though he reciprocated her feelings, knowing more about Buddhism makes me appreciate that movie a bit more. Buddha is such a fascinating figure, I loved learning more about how he saw the world. Highly recommended!
