Publisher's summary

Experience a deeper prayer life through this fresh take on ancient liturgy for believers today.

Designed to help individuals, families, and congregations pray together across denominations, this audiobook of common prayer will help you and your community join together each day with the same songs, scriptures, and prayers. Composed under an advisory team of liturgy experts, these three influential and inspiring authors have created Common Prayer - a tapestry of prayer that will help the church be one as God is one.

This universal prayer audiobook allows listeners to greet each day together, remembering significant dates and Christian heroes in church history, as well as important historic dates in the struggle for freedom and justice. There are morning prayers for each day of the year, evening prayers for each of the seven days of the week, a midday prayer to be repeated throughout the year, and prayers for special occasions. In addition, there are morning prayers for Holy Week.

Common Prayer also includes a unique songbook composed of music and classic lyrics to more than fifty songs from various traditions, including African spirituals, traditional hymns, Mennonite gathering songs, and Taize chants. Tools for prayer are scattered throughout to aid those who are unfamiliar with liturgy and to deepen the prayer life of those who are familiar with liturgical prayer.

Ultimately, Common Prayer makes liturgy dance, taking the best of the old and bringing new life to it with a fresh fingerprint for the contemporary renewal of the church.

A Useless Waste!

As far as I can tell from endless listening this is a simple monotone reading of the Book of Common Prayer. No index. Impossible to use or locate anything in the text. A total waste of a credit. Completely the WRONG format for a book of this type. What were these people thinking?

Save your money and just buy the book.

This audio is not organized to be able to listen to today's reading, it goes through morning readings for the whole year and then begins again with noon reading for the year etc. It is read (performed) as written. Go to Amazon and look at the table of contents to see what I mean. There is no way to use this audio book in the way the real book is intended. This is very sad since the material is lovely and inspiring. I am so disappointed, the audio as organized is as useless as a list...utterly useless, I am bummed. This could have been so good, it would not have taken much to set it up to be useful, each section a day's reading in total, maybe they will re-release it someday.

This book is for you

-- no matter who you are, as Claiborne proclaims in the introduction. I'm a great admirer of Claiborne and had wondered what his energy turned to worship would be like. First I downloaded this an an ebook - which is so wonderful that I broke my rule of never buying a book in more than one format and downloaded the audio. The authors deliver what they promise, that is, they mine "the oldest and best traditions of Christian prayer and made them dance a little."

So whether you're a late middle-aged Canadian Catholic like me or any other demographic, I think there's something in here to help you create sacred space (and smile). More than having something for everyone, Common Prayer has something for all: I think this captures worship that can bridge generation and denominational gaps.

Love this book, but audio it's not set up well

Would you try another book from the authors and/or the narrators?

Yes, but I'd want better navigation. In the book, the 'chapters' are actually dates. In the audio book, the chapters are numbered, not dated. To listen to today's prayers, I need to know what chapter number it is. That's a pain.

Would you recommend Common Prayer to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes. It is a great resource for daily spirituality.

The Chapters need to be labeled much more clearly

Since this book is "not the kind of book you pick up and read straight through" (introduction), and is, in fact, a reference book, the chapters need to be relabeled with the name of the section of the book they are recording, and made much shorter.

Company

This recording is great for the times you are having morning devotions alone and you need to be reminded you are part of the larger community.

Great for Historical, Spiritual & Personal Growth

The combination of historical examples, worship, introduction to other authors, and challenges make for a fantastic audiobook

Great for Daily Energy, Remembrance, and Devotion - just one downside

I’m new to the concept of liturgy and I like the new way (to me) of approaching God on a daily basis. The people saying/singing parts of each day in unison and a cappella (sp) was awkward but It’s helping me to stretch my comfort zone.

I wish the chapters were labeled as they are in the book so I can find the day I’m on. And also could quickly find the nightly prayers.

Lastly, why, why, why did they not read the Bible references from each day? Fortunately I have the physical book to see the references so I can read the verses. The audio book should stand on its own so I don’t have to own the physical book. I bought this to have the liturgy as I travel. (The physical book is large.)

To be clear, I don’t expect the entire set of scriptures to be read I would just like to know what to read. For example, just say, “Psalm 119:34-37”. Then I’ll look up the verse in my bible and read it.

Not a huge issue in the big scheme of things, but I feel it’s a large part of liturgy and it should be part of this audio book.
