Publisher's summary

This revised edition includes a new epilogue, "Coming up on Twenty-Five Years" since the entry of the Evangelical Orthodox into the Holy Orthodox Church. This is the story of a handful of courageous men and their congregations who risked stable occupations, security and the approval of life-long friends to be obedient to God's call. It is also the story of every believer who is searching for the Church. Where Christ is Lord. Where holiness, human responsibility, and the sovereignty of God are preached. Where fellowship is more than a covered-dish supper in the church basement. And where fads and fashions take a backseat to apostolic worship and doctrine. This is a book, for Orthodox Christians, looking for ways to bring new life to their own Churches. It's also a book for those completely dissatisfied - those on their own search. And it's a book for Orthodox Christians, looking for renewal.

Inspiring and Informative

I am an evangelical who has also recently developed an interest in Orthodoxy. Fr. Gilquist's story was really fascinating and inspiring. At first, I was a little distracted by his reading style because you can tell he is not a professional narrator and it feels like you are being read to. But by the middle of the book I was used to his style, and by the end I came to find his voice very friendly and encouraging. I highly recommend this book to evangelicals who are interested in Orthodoxy. He directly addresses all the doctrinal points that evangelicals will be wondering about, and makes a compelling case for the Orthodox view. This book has inspired me to pursue further study.

Compelling Story

So great to hear Fr Peter's warm voice. We miss him. The history is well told, and even after having read the entire book 13 years ago we found it still or again fascinating. The epilog was especially rich, but don't skip straight to it—the rest of the book builds to make the end profound.

Good Story: Thoughtful and Cronological

I listened to the book in a few sittings while working. It is difficult to find Orthodox conversion stories from Americans and it fills an entry level niche.

Great book for those looking to worship Christ.

This is a great book for those looking for the church described in the New Testament. Protestants who are looking for the ancient faith that is found in the Orthodox Church.

Good Explanation for non-Orthodox

The author is a former Protestant minister turned Orthodox priest. His explanations and defense of Orthodox teachings are aimed at non-Orthodox Christians, and since he was once Protestant, he knows exactly what to discuss.

A story of the journey…

Growing up in a protestant and evangelical background this book resonated with me. It perfectly describes the journey I went through from my childhood. The stories reflected the yearning and the searching for the truth church. But also expressed the victories in the struggles. Hearing the stories from the authors perspective and in the authors own voice helps to capture the specialness of this book.

I love you dad!

interesting view

interesting, exciting, but incomplete in explanation of its whole acceptance of doctrine that is outside the Faith. For example, exaggerating Mary into always a virgin. She is blessed and chosen by the Lord God. She had children and James was one of them. Correct this and Evangelicals will come back to and embrace Orthodoxy.

Orthodox teachings, evangelical Biblical preaching

In documenting his journey, Father Gillquist “writes to” evangelicals on “becoming” Orthodox. His powerful Gospel preaching is grips listeners. I recommend for anyone inquiring into Orthodoxy from an evangelical background.
