Publisher's summary

With The Teachings of Don Juan, Carlos Castaneda chronicled a journey toward enlightenment under the tutelage of Yaqui Indian guru don Juan. Having sold more than eight million copies of his books around the world, Castaneda has inspired countless readers with his awareness-expanding experiences. After spending five years with Don Juan in the early 60s, Castaneda returned to Mexico in 1968 to continue his exploration of non-ordinary reality and draw ever closer to his ultimate goal of becoming a man of knowledge. Far from Western civilization, Don Juan and his world of hallucinogenic drugs offer insight and inducements toward true awakening—wisdom that Castaneda passes on in this astounding work.

Great Story reminds me of my childhood

No I didn't grow up with a Yaqui tribe. LOL - My uncle used to really be into Carlos Castaneda and when I was young we would go for walks in the woods and he would share some of the wisdom and teachings from the books. I can't help but remember those times when I go through the works now it brings back great memories. I really like the Narrator for these books and I think I will end up getting them all.

Not for everyone, but everyone could learn from it

What did you love best about A Separate Reality?

Luis Moreno is a very good, engrossing narrator for the Castaneda books. Of course, it can't hurt that I am totally enthralled by the story and experiences portrayed.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, more laughter than tears but there were experiences at both extremes.

Any additional comments?

This is a very powerful story and while I disagree, some extreme religious readers may find too much issue with the perspective portrayed to get the real meaning and truth behind the story.

Still great after 50 years

Read all of Castenada back in the last century. Doesn’t disappoint- if anything better than it was so long ago.

How To Completely Frustrate A Yaki Medicine Man

The second book in Carlos Castenada’s Teachings of Don Juan picks up a few years after the first book ended.
Carlos, who has undertaken an apprenticeship with Don Juan, got scared by his experiences while smoking peyote on his spiritual journey and ran away to LA to pursue his mundane life away from unexplainable experiences.
Feeling that his work is incomplete, he returns to his teacher and resumes his work with the little smoke.
He is incredibly fearful and demands explanations for everything that occurs like it was a television show that could be easily explained.
I’m surprised that Don Juan continues to teach Carlos, He is completely obtuse. His mind is so unexpandable that even when he has transcendental experiences he refuses to frame them in that light and just becomes more fearful.
If I were Don Juan and had a student that thick, that after 10 years he still doesn’t get any of what I’m teaching, I might tell him it’s hopeless and he should try another path-except that every time he comes to the desert he brings bags of groceries, so in that respect he’s useful.
But by the end of A Separate Reality, Don Juan basically tells Carlos that it doesn’t matter if he comes back or not. Hmmm.
Where’s the big reason why so many people devoured these books?

The knowledge Don Juan shares with Carlos is beyond the normal society's terms of practical. It is a way to become eternally conscious and truly see... I feel proudly blessed to have come across this information and know it's wisdom will endure eternity.
