Publisher's summary

"My name is Larkspur, and I am an Elemental."

My people use the power of the earth to sustain life and defy our enemies. I should be at my father's side as a royal princess. But as a half-breed, bastard child, that isn't going to happen.

I've been accused of attacking the queen, my wicked stepmother, and my life is suddenly on the line. I have only two options left to me: banishment, or training to become one of the King's Elite Guards, an Ender.

Option one will kill me.

Option two is meant to break me, but is the only way to survive.

Did I mention I have no power like the rest of the elementals, and my connection to the earth is worth next to nothing?

Could things get any worse? Of course they can. Welcome to being an Elemental.

interesting story

This book has a good story line although things feel a bit rushed through the action portion, a somewhat happy ending and a cliff hanger leaves the reader waiting for the next book

5 stars!

The story was amazing and I couldn't stop listening to it. The narration was excellent. This is the first audio book for me and at first I thought her voice was too soothing but as I finished the first chapter I thought her voice fit well. I can't wait to get through the rest of the series!

I did receive a free audiobook in return for an honest review.

Not what I expected

I did not expect the story to build up as it did. And I am honestly feeling like this is a series that will build up tension further more as it progresses. The audio performance was great and I could not sleep until one little story arch was over and I could settle my thoughts. Reminds me of watching a fantasy tv show, where you just can’t look away and need to know how it’s going to end. All the cliffhangers will anger you, yet you will come back for more. Lark and her world are hauntingly different from what I am used to reading and that is frightening in a way, as it’s harder for me to predict the next step, but also fantastic in every sense of the word to me. I love diving into an alternative reality and that was definitely the case. So, let’s see what’s happening in the next one!

Excellent start to learning about the elementals

Shannon Mayer always kills it with her books and this one is no different. Based in the same world as The Rylee Adamson Series and The Questing Witch Series this specific series is based on a half breed elemental that there is more to than meets the eye. Larkspur starts this series very timid and unsure of herself and her natural power due to years of poor treatment and ignorance. It was amazing to see Lark grow and learn throughout this book and I can only imagine she will continue to grow from here. I can’t wait to continue this ride with Lark and her companions.

Lauren Fortgang did an excellent job narrating this series and I am so excited to listen to more.

This first book had me. I've since downloaded each one that follows and was not disappointed.

Lark has a long journey ahead. What a great intro to her beginnings.

This world and story have so many facets to uncover and in this first installment you get a real feel for the characters and the adventures to be uncovered. It’s a great introduction to Lark and those closest to her. I do love that the story gave closure with hints of what’s to come. Can’t wait to get into book two.

Good versus evil: Mayer Style

While this book is the same world as Rylee Adamson’s, it’s set years before Rylee and therefore not a continuous storyline.
This book is also not like Rylee in that with Larkspur we get to watch her grow from a seeder (low on the list of powers, and lower on the amount of power she has as a seeder) to a princess, albeit a halfbreed and shunned.
The plot follows Lark as she follows her disjointed memories and learns to break through her magical barrier. She works basically as secret service for the same royals who show her no love and are looking to finish her. The flashbacks provide much needed insight to Lark’s past and help the reader understand that because she doesn’t have one of the four typical elemental powers but a fifth much rarer type of power she’s either sought after to control or to kill.
As is typical with Mayer many of the relationships we watch build in this book turn us on our backsides, you never know who to trust or who will turn on Lark which keeps you pining for more. Despite all of this Lark pushes on, stays true to herself and to her family, even when they don’t stay true to her. She’s a powerful force that will not be oppressed
