Publisher's Summary

Through the ages, men of flair, faculty, and outstanding courage have contributed to their country's heritage. Others, like the snivelling worm Edmund, Duke of Edinburgh (alias "The Blackadder"), have emerged from the dust of dodgy documents to claim their wrongful place in history. The historic first series introduced us to Rowan Atkinson's first incarnation as Blackadder, the incompetent, bitter, and twisted son of Richard, Duke of York, who, with the help of his trusty (and equally stinky) aide, Baldrick (Tony Robinson), and Percy (Tim McInnerny), begins his slithering journey through the ages, scheming for an easier life, a better position, and perhaps even a shot at the throne itself.
The original series also stars Brian Blessed as Richard IV, Peter Cook as Richard III, Miriam Margolyes as the Infanta Maria of Spain, and Rik Mayall as Mad Gerald. Blackadder was runner-up in the BBC's search for Britain's Best Sitcom.

Doesn't translate well to audio only

Obviously many visual jokes and important storyline information that does not come through with just the audio track of this TV show. Very frustrating, so stopped listening half way through. Makes me want to watch the TV show, though, because it is obviously quite funny if you can see what's happening.

Better viewed than heard

I love all the other Blackadder audios, but I had forgotten how many sight gags were in the first series. It's frustrating to have long pauses and then bursts of audience laughter and you don't know what is happening.

The other 3 series are fabulous, though. The character of Blackadder changed from the spineless creep of the first series to a wise-cracking and witty hero who doesn't need sight gags.

Good

Good. Liked listening to the programmes but if I hadn't had seen the programmes before many times some of the more visual jokes wouldn't have got across as well, but overall I enjoyed experiencing the series this way.

Underrated series, but hits the mark for me

Curtis and Atkinson were the writers for this first series. It was considered hit and miss and Blackadder was almost not given a second series - this series cost so much especially in terms of sets. Ben Elton was brought in and wrote the next three series with Richard Curtis and it was a huge success. I still have a fondness for this first series - love Brian Blessed and the late great Rik Mayall as Mad Gerald!!
