Publisher's Summary

[Contains explicit content] Mortal City gets intimate with some of New York’s most interesting strangers. Each episode shares vivid and often funny stories about sex, death and the gritty magic that makes living here worth the trouble.
Episode 1: After crashing the memorial service for street photographer Bill Cunningham, Kathleen Horan realizes it’s the random but personal connections we make that give New York City its magic.
Episode 2: Douglas is intimate with the city in a way few others will ever be: through its trash. From bloody pennies to a prized baseball card, the sanitation worker shares what he’s seen when no one was looking.
Episode 3: Tag sale guru Mona is an anchor for her clients whose lives are in transit. But even she isn’t immune to the complicated emotions involved in giving old stuff a new life.
Episode 4: Commander Rocky claims to have had an array of careers, from pimping to “starting hip hop.” Ultimately, a family tragedy led him to his life’s calling: leading a volunteer ambulance corps in Bed Stuy.
Episode 5: Zoe was a sex worker for 20 years and has been a drug addict for even longer. She looks back at a lost era of New York City, dragging her years of hard living into the light.
Episode 6: Jared found success in DNA testing from an RV. His growing mobile fleet uncovers secrets, but the fallout often throws him in the middle of family dramas.
Episode 7: Frankie followed his love of costumes from the Navy to a Manhattan club. Now he can’t imagine a life without wigs, dresses, and the support of his co-stars.
Episode 8: Serge created a SoHo hotspot in his own image, celebrating promiscuity, gluttony, and inclusivity. After 40 years at the helm, he relishes sharing the sweet and sordid history of his bustling bistro.

Awesome; I want more!

Kathleen was lovely and asked all the right questions in the perfect way. Personalities were colorful. I want to meet them, though I feel I already have. So much fun and thought-provoking.

The Voices!

Full disclosure: I've known Kathleen for many years, and I've always been an admirer. Still, "Mortal City" is a greater joy than I could've imagined. The range of characters, the warmth and intimacy of the conversations, the comedy and gravity all intertwined -- I'm just awestruck and enthralled. The treats just keep coming. I can't wait for more.
