Publisher's Summary

This BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Elizabeth Gaskell's tale of Manchester life is set in the 19th century, when a series of bad harvests placed a heavy tax burden on workers. Gaskell's powerful drama, adapted here for Woman's Hour, is regarded as one of the most important novels of its time.

Good for class reading

I needed to read Mary Barton for a college English class. I listened to this dramatization audio book first, then read the book and marked important passages. When reading, it often felt like I had already read the words. Very true to the text, good voices, pleasure to listen too. For content, this industrial England novel is Victorian in period, but not like Pride and Prejudice. There is a good, moving plot after the social commentary at the beginning. 5 stars!

a good Lancashire tale

This is a book which would appeal to Lancashire folk especially (although not exclusively). It is well dramatised and a good story although not very long.
