Publisher's summary

From one of the nation's preeminent experts in the study of women and emotion, here is a breakthrough new book based on the author's award-winning research.

It's not a surprise that our fast-paced, overly analytical culture is pushing people - especially women - to spend countless hours thinking about negative ideas, feelings, and experiences. Renowned psychologist Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema calls this overthinking. Her groundbreaking research shows that an increasing number of women - more than half of those in her extensive study - are doing it too much and too often, hindering their ability to lead a satisfying life.

Overthinking can be anything from fretting about big questions such as "What am I doing with my life?" to losing sleep over a friend's innocent comment. It is causing women to feel sad, anxious, or seriously depressed, and she challenges the assumption that constantly expressing and analyzing our emotions is a good thing. In Women Who Think Too Much, Nolen-Hoeksema provides concrete strategies that can be used to escape these negative thoughts, move to higher ground, and avoid future traps.

Critic reviews

"A must read for any woman who has ever felt stuck in her life, and any man who has been confused by why the women they love get so 'caught up thinking' they can't enjoy life. Nolen-Hoeksema offers practical methods to self-diagnose and pathways toward greater emotional freedom." (William S. Pollack, Ph.D., Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard University)

Generic tools for overcoming overthinking

I approached this book with a hopes I would walk away with some real tools to overcome overthinking. Instead, I heard many stories that confirm I overthink (yes, I knew this) and that there are many people that do (also no surprise). I do not recommend this book for anyone single or in a miserable/unsupportive relationship. Many of the stories used involved women that had loving/supporting spouses that helped them get through their hardships. Great for them!!! For those that do not have that special person in their life, then...
I replayed many parts to make sure I didn’t accidentally miss any of the tools and all I came away with is that we must stop ourselves from thinking negatively (duh!)...and the common theme I recall in the stories is women yelling “STOP!” at themselves whenever they see themselves going down that path. I will try it but feel like I need something more. My search continues.

Ironically, thought provoking!

A helpful listen for women and men. Susan helps to explain in real words what women have known forever, but maybe haven't been able to understand as very normal mental behavior. For men, it will certainly give you a glimpse in to the complexity of the female mind and provide some direction (should you choose to accept it) for enriching your female relationships.

Loved 1st chapter but not the long stories after..

Loved the first chapter. After that, long-drawn stories of hardship... I am a little disappointed.

Couldn't Finish

As I listened I thought how sad women were portrayed in this book. I thought women sounded whiney in an exaggerated way. Maybe the last chapter would have been redeeming, but I just couldn't risk it.

All Examples - No Advice

Too many stories, no information on how to prevent overthinking. Waste of time and money.

Could not hold my attention. Generic suggestions.

The stories provided as to why people tend to overthink did not result in ways to suggest behavior modifications that would reduce your tendency not to over think. Basically, get a hobby, distract yourself, be assertive with your needs and find people who are supportive toward you and nourish those relationships.

I just can’t see how an author thinks this is writing

Too dull and not very thought provoking...maybe that’s the point...not to think! (Pun intended)

Boring

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Good for people with minor issues. I found it irrelevant and not helpful for myself or those with significant issues. If one has complex PTSD, not helpful. Those who have flashbacks like myself this book is non-helpful.
