Publisher's summary

The author of the classic best seller Lincoln on Leadership answers the question: How would President Lincoln handle the pressing crises of our modern world?

Abraham Lincoln is recognized as one of history's finest leaders, a great president when the United States was under tremendous strain. But suppose he were alive today. How would Lincoln deal with today's high-pressure issues, from politics to business?

Based on a lifelong study of Lincoln's life, writings, and speeches, best-selling author Donald T. Phillips offers compelling ideas on how Lincoln would employ his exemplary leadership and executive style. How would Lincoln handle today's frayed race relations, terrorism at home and abroad, gun control, and the influence of special interest groups on Congress? What would have been Lincoln's reaction to the invasion of Iraq? How would he have handled the Great Recession? What would be his stance on science and climate change? How did Lincoln feel about government entitlement programs? Would he have them at all? How would he feel about the growing gap between the haves and the have-nots, a worker's right to strike, the minimum wage, and labor unions? Would Lincoln have a mobile phone and embrace the whirl of social media? Phillips hews very closely to Lincoln's extensive writings and records to offer a fascinating look at how we might solve some of our most challenging problems, Lincoln style.

Leveraging Lincoln to drive a personal agenda

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Objective content would have been a refreshing starting point. First, I must say that I absolutely loved the original version of Lincoln on Leadership. I've personally purchased numerous copies to share with my co-workers over the years since I found the book. It was an engrossing, insightful, and applicable read. I have never gotten a bad review of that book.

But I can not be more disappointed with this new version. The book is nothing more than the author's attempt to frame his personal agenda into one that would be theoreticaly endorsed by Lincoln. Every question is answered as if Lincoln is an active left-wing Democrat in our modern times. The lack of objectivity by the author to champion every current Liberal cause and agenda is almost too much to believe. I would suspect some of the author's perspectives to come to the top, but every Lincoln opinion is now aligned with the Left's agenda.

Sadly, objectivity is sorely lacking in this book. While I am by no means an apologist for the current Republican Party or their platform, listening to this book was like watching a systematic beat down of the policies of the GOP.

I have no doubt that Mr. Lincoln would be much more moderate in today's political landscape, but to make him part of the Left's power machine is a disservice to the listener and the memory of a proven political moderate.

Disappointed.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Normally I swap history with fiction, but this was fiction enough for me.

Which scene was your favorite?

The quotes directly from Lincoln without the author's slant.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Lincoln on Leadership for Today?

The oppressive political bias of the author.

Any additional comments?

The author has lost my respect as a reader.

putting words in dead people's mouths...

....is now a grand part of rewriting history. This book was amusing/entertaining/and gave concrete evidence on how a non thinking generation is being mentally influenced by mixing fiction and nonfiction.

Incredible Leader, Liberal Author

I suspect earlier iterations of this book are much better. In its current form this book is a vehicle to support a liberal agenda with Lincoln’s action. I’m a moderate and disappointed with this book which read more like a subjective opinion editorial.

not what I thought it was

somewhat interesting. not what I thought it was. less about leadership and more about speculating Lincoln's views on today's politicized issues.

very liberal bent

I thought I was going to have a valuation of Lincoln and not more about his opinion of what he would do or say. What he would do or say in our time. To put a fine point on the fact Donald Phillips says that Lincoln would B4 Evolution and for science Environmental issues of today is disheartening and will not have another book by Donald Phillips in my audio file

educational and entertaining

As a Canadian, I did not learn much of Abe through formal education. though I've known him to be one of the great leaders of the past. As a leader in my own organization, I constantly seek out wisdom on the subject. This book was randomly discovered. as the reviews looked good and the subject matter was something I was curious about I bought it.

To my surprise the story was enthralling and the lessons poignant. I found myself idolizing the fallen leader and I can see why so many others do as well.

I was surprised how liberal the past leader of the Republican party was. I think there is lessons in this book for any leader looking to build a families first organization.

Not the same as the actual book

This was not at all the same as the paper back book I have. Same book title and author and cover even but was far from the paperback version and not nearly as good.

Excellent Read

As a new leader in a manufacturing company, I have been researching ways to develop a team that is disconnected. As I was researching for books, I found “Lincoln on Leadership for Today”.

overall a good book

i only didnt like the summary at end of right/left being bad/good. i think the propper path is always a mix of compassion and personal accountability. nothing fully right or fully left will survive as long as humans are involved. it requires balance and i think Lincoln would have agreed.

Outstanding

It usually takes me about a month to get through an audio book because I only usually listen during my commute to work. However I was so taken by this book that I literally couldn't stop listening. So many practical applications about such a transformative figure that was divinely placed to lead this nation in such a delicate a time in history as the civil war.
