Publisher's summary

Stoicism: Live a Life of Virtue - Complete Guide on Stoicism provides an overview of the history of the stoic philosophy as well as profiles of some of the ancient masters who contributed to its development. In addition, it tells the stories of some modern practitioners of the philosophy who successfully used it to overcome difficult situations in their lives. We have also provided a number of exercises that you can use to help make Stoicism a part of your daily life.

Topics covered include:

  • The early history of Stoicism, from its founding as a school of thought by Zeno in 300 BC to its decline due to the growing popularity of Christianity, and its resurgence in modern times.
  • Profiles of three masters who were important in the development of the Stoic philosophy: Epictetus, the former slave who became one of the most influential Stoic philosophers; Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor who helped promote its popularity; and the controversial Seneca, who sought to live the Stoic life in spite of his lavish lifestyle.
  • Why Stoicism became popular in recent years and its appeal not only to people from all walks of life as well as those with differing belief systems.
  • Practical exercises that you can use to practice Stoic mindfulness in your daily life, ranging from morning and evening reflections to keeping a mindfulness journal.
  • Inspiring stories of people who have used Stoicism in order to overcome difficult situations in their daily lives, including the amazing story of Sam Sullivan, who used Stoic principles to not only recover from a crippling injury that left him paralyzed but also to successfully run for mayor of Vancouver.

Start living the stoic life today.

Complete guide on stoicism

An excellent practical guide to immediately start a philosophy. This guide goes beyond an academic study into a realistic practice. The suggestions and exercises are easy but takes discipline to continue the journey . Ryan James presentation, knowledge, and enthusiasm is great. Thanks, Ryan!

Good, but fairly simplistic primer on Stoicism...

Good, but fairly simplistic primer on Stoicism. I felt well connected and could relate to the thoughts and themes described. I relate well to how the author portrays internal conflict and lack of emotional control, areas i want to work on. This seemed a helpful start, but lacks a lot of substance and was repetitive at times.

hard

I needed to expand my ability to read difficult material and this fit right in that category. After a few days it got easier, prepare to look at the footnotes a lot

It's great because even if you don't know who he is, you get his life in a nutshell, it gives a good background to the rest of the book.

interesting

I listen a lot of philosophy and listen this in preparation for a class on Mediterranean warfare. Interesting and still relevant, and a great introduction to ancient philosophy for anyone who hasn't have any yet.

well worth

The journal of the Emperor who learned from the stoics how to comport oneself that still has validity in modern situations. There are some parts of the book that didn't translate well or that had some difficult to understand phrasing but generally a worthwhile examination of how to deal with others and be true to yourself. Well worth the investment of time
