Publisher's Summary

From celebrity gossip expert and BuzzFeed culture writer Anne Helen Petersen comes an accessible, analytical look at how female celebrities are pushing boundaries of what it means to be an "acceptable" woman.
You know the type: the woman who won't shut up, who's too brazen, too opinionated - too much. She's the unruly woman, and she embodies one of the most provocative and powerful forms of womanhood today. In Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud, Anne Helen Petersen uses the lens of "unruliness" to explore the ascension of pop culture powerhouses like Lena Dunham, Nicki Minaj, and Kim Kardashian, exploring why the public loves to love (and hate) these controversial figures. With its brisk, incisive analysis, Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud will be a conversation-starting book on what makes and breaks celebrity today.

Critic Reviews

"Petersen's gloriously bumptious, brash ode to non-conforming women suits the needs of this dark moment. Her careful examination of how we eviscerate the women who confound or threaten is crucial reading if we are ever to be better." (Rebecca Traister, New York Times best-selling author of All the Single Ladies)

Excellent Book

This is an excellent analysis of current feminism, and the misogyny unleashed by the 2016 election. My only issue is the inclusion of Caitlyn Jenner. There have been many transgender activists before her who have done a lot more to advance the cause of the LGBTQ community, like Laverne Cox

Every woman (and man) should read this book!

This book does an excellent job describing the cultural barriers set up to control women in our society through the lenses of many different, and very famous, women. I am 27 years old and I think every woman of every age should be talking about this with each other. It should be taught in high schools across America. I am giving it to all of my friends for Christmas this year. Here's to Unruly Women!

Intersectionality and open mindedness

Very interesting ready that made me question the policing of my own femininity (outwardly and inwardly) and the cognitive dissonances I've faced as a millennial woman. Only downfall, I wish there were more references to other unruly women (Solange, Tracee Ellis Ross, J K Rowling, Janelle Monae to name a few) Modanna is mentioned in pretty much, every chapter! Great read all the same.

A step forward for self worth

As an Australian woman listening to this book for the first time, I felt both empowered and saddened to hear the words of truth by Anne Helen Peterson throughout the chapters. Whilst the majority of the book references America, it’s an eye opening read (listen) for all women, all people, around the world. It should be heard and carefully listened to, to promote everyone’s equal right to live happy and healthy lives, no matter their gender, race, size, locale... WE ARE ALL OURSELVES AND SHOULD EMBRACE AND RESPECT OURSELVES AND EACH OTHER. Thanks for a great book x
