Publisher's Summary

From childhood on, we're barraged by messages that it's sad to be old. That wrinkles are embarrassing, and old people useless. Author and activist Ashton Applewhite believed them too until she realized where this prejudice comes from and the damage it does. Lively, funny, and deeply researched, This Chair Rocks traces Applewhite's journey from apprehensive boomer to pro-aging radical, and in the process debunks myth after myth about late life.
The book explains the roots of ageism in history and in our own age denial and how it divides and debases, examines how ageist myths and stereotypes cripple the way our brains and bodies function, looks at ageism in the workplace and the bedroom, exposes the cost of the all-American myth of independence, critiques the portrayal of olders as burdens to society, describes what an all-age-friendly world would look like, and concludes with a rousing call to action.
It's time to create a world of age equality by making discrimination on the basis of age as unacceptable as any other kind. Whether you're older or hoping to get there, this book will shake you by the shoulders, cheer you up, make you mad, and change the way you see the rest of your life. Age pride!

Age Pride is for everyone!

This book has radically altered how I perceive myself and my place in society. Thank you Ashton for your thoughtful and thorough research into what was, for me, a mysterious puzzle, and for your delightful humor! Your wit and wisdom is disarming. It has opened my mind and my heart to embrace a future in which I thrive along with boomers and everyone else willing to let go of all the 'isms'.

I'll have what she's having.

This is a very good book; thorough, well-researched, well-written, funny, urgent.
Read this if you can't figure out why anyone would try to make a big deal out of ageism (you may be old one day). Read it if you are really sick of exasperated sighs, rolling eyes, and pitying smiles whenever you are waiting for service and there happens to be someone behind you....If, when the salesman calls you "Young lady", you suspect he's trying to be nice, but you get an urge to hit him anyway....or all the salesmen scatter when you walk in...if all the novelty has gone out of being invisible in public...if you want to keep working into your 60's or 70's, just because you want to!
Ms. Applewhite is a really funny and impassioned public speaker, and I was disappointed to find her reading voice a little less captivating, but, in my opinion, this is a must read. For everyone. If we don't die young, we will get old. And in this youth-obsessed country, it's no picnic!
