Publisher's Summary

Families formed by artificial insemination, surrogacy, same-sex couples, and other arrangements are becoming more mainstream and yet they are still surprisingly unrecognized and misunderstood. Many believe that it is impossible to have the family they desire in a culture that postpones marriage, prioritizes career and appears to be losing much of its so-called American values. To the contrary, The New American Family illustrates how family in America is not disappearing but reawakening in a fascinating and healthy way. The stories of these new American families will challenge and enlighten those who listen and possibly open new doors for those who wonder what the future of family may hold for them.

Touching and informative

I really enjoyed this book. Lauren Brim has done thorough research to describe many aspects of fertility and parenting, and includes narrated stories from couples who explored their own alternative family models. As someone with a rather convoluted fertility journey of my own, I really appreciate the difficult choices and experiences shared in this book. The overall tone of the book is positive, though Lauren does not sugar coat some of her darker episodes. It's honest, informative and lovingly told.

Wonderfully enjoyable book and I learned a lot

This book was a great "listen" -- it was hard to stop listening when I needed to start doing other things. I listened while driving and doing housework, which was perfect, because it was fully engaging but also very easy to understand. The narration was very pleasant.

I learned a lot about people who have children in unconventional family situations, all about their experiences from a first person viewpoint, but also learned some statistics and historical background to give context.

I developed more understanding about a wide variety of new family forms and how people in them feel about them. It was both interesting and heartening. The strength of the love that these parents felt for their children really came through.
