Publisher's Summary

Prolific author, playwright, bon vivant of the literary set, Hollywood insider. Everybody loved and trusted Jack Unterweger. Unfortunately, 11 women saw a different side to the charmed celebrity: a cold-blooded serial killer whose gift for manipulation was genius - pure and evil.
While serving a life sentence for the murder of a young girl, Jack Unterweger wrote seven books, saw his critically acclaimed autobiography made into a film, and became a cause celebre among influential Austrian literati who successfully campaigned for his release. Riding high on the fame, he arrived in Los Angeles where he nurtured his career as a journalist. Then, one by one, Hollywood prostitutes started turning up dead. Unterweger covered the story. There was a reason why his reporting of the crimes seemed so vivid.
With unprecedented access to Unterweger's private papers, John Leake peels back the layers of deception to reveal the alarming story of an international celebrity - and reviled serial killer - and a lifetime of shocking twists no Hollywood screenwriter could have invented.

Finally something New!

I've read every true crime book ever written. ...OK that's probably not true, but sometimes I feel that way... especially when it comes to Audible! That is why I was so excited by John Leake's excellent tale about the "career" of serial killer, and fascinating sadist Jack Unterweger. He is the Austrian Bundy in every way that matters. The author tells an enthralling and sometimes heart-pounding true crime yarn about a charismatic murderer who manages to gain the support of Austria's MVPs to the point that they petition the government to release him despite his life sentence that for murdering a woman brutally.

So, they let him out and... go figure, he goes on a prostitute-killing rampage. Leaks tells of the fame and fortune Unterweger enjoys as a celebrated author and "reformed man". He has most of them fooled... but there is a dogged investigation that finally gets into his trail.

Another aspect that I loved was learning how different the justice system is in Austria. The fact that the defendant can participate in cross-examination blew my sensible American mind, nevertheless it made for GREAT theatre!

The narrator did a great job with all the European accents and with both male and female voices. As a huge Audiobook fan and even bigger true crime junkie, I absolutely loved this book and I'd highly recommend it to any fan of the genre. Now I have to start looking for my next True Crime mystery! Enjoy!
