Publisher's summary

The hookup is now part of college life. Yet the drunken encounter we always hear about tells only a fraction of the story. Rising above misinformation and moralizing, Lisa Wade offers the definitive account of this new sexual culture and demonstrates that the truth is both more heartening and more harrowing than we thought.

Offering invaluable insights for parents, educators, and students, Wade situates hookup culture within the history of sexuality, the evolution of higher education, and the unfinished feminist revolution. Working with new research, she maps out a punishing emotional landscape marked by unequal pleasures, competition for status, and sexual violence. She discovers that the most privileged students tend to like hookup culture the most, and she considers its effects on racial and sexual minorities, students who "opt out", and those who participate ambivalently.

Accessible and open-minded, compassionate and brutally honest, American Hookup explains where we are and how we got here, asking not "How do we go back?" but "Where do we go from here?"

Really interesting read

This topic is such true on American university campus today, it’s uncanny but not to realize it.

Eye Opening

This book is an insightful look into the psychology of college aged students and the hook up culture. With first person accounts of typical college hook ups, greek life, and sexual violence on campus. This book has helped me see things from a different perspective since I did not go to a typical college and have been in a monogamous relationships for most my life. I highly recommend this for all high school and up.

Great book! I didn't love the voice of the reader.

The book was great! However, it was at times hard to listen to because the reader has a robotic voice that is more suited for giving directions through traffic. Very robotic.

Good read well written, highly feminist

The book was well written the author did a standup job expressing all the variables of some difficult topics and discussing some common misconceptions about hookup culture. Some details that were mentioned were only mentioned in passing and the male half of the story is largely presented through 3rd partys horror story or from guys who later turn gay perspective. There is mainly negative reference frame sentiment towards straight men and altho the tone sounds objective the frame is always there is little good from men.

Really important

Great book for any age. I'm way past college and still found it useful for thinking about Tinder as an adult.

Can't stop thinking about this book!

I think and talk about this book all the time. Though it doesn't seem like it applies to the larger world outside of college campuses, it does because students who are exposed/indoctrinated into this "hookup culture" then graduate and continue to create and participate in this culture in the dating world. It is an important look at how tension and misunderstandings manifest in relationships when we are young and we can carry those misunderstandings and learned behaviors into every other relationship we have.

I truly enjoyed this book and I think it is important for everyone to read particularly given the climate we are currently living in!

Féministe view of Sex

Hyperbolic, féministe view of sex, love and relationship. Lobe-sided and minimalisation of humaine needs for love, meaning of life and spirituality regardless of their sex. This is a sad unscientific and slanted study base on self evaluation of small number of students introspection. Not worth your time.

Tired cliches

This book relies heavily on tired college stereotypes about frats and sex. I learned next to nothing from this. This is mainly those how's head is in the sand.
