Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents a passionate story from the thrilling Night Tales series....

Arson investigator Ryan Piasecki was a man who got the job done no matter what the obstacle...or how beautiful she was. Ambitious executive Natalie Fletcher's new business was going up in smoke, literally, and she needed Ryan's help to catch the arsonist. But if he wasn't careful, the sparks flying between him and this hothouse rose would erupt into a five-alarm blaze - and they'd both be engulfed by the Night Smoke.

Why does the beinning always piss me off?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

sure

If you’ve listened to books by Nora Roberts before, how does this one compare?

I began reading Nora Roberts books when Witness came out. I loved the book and couldn't wait for the next one. Since then I've been trying to read all of her books. Her older books always piss me off like this one. The men are sooo sexist! What is with this whole I'm so amazing that you're going to sleep with me crap? If a fire inspector ever acted the way Rye did towards a woman and victim he'd be fired. Needless to say her female characters have gotten stronger and capable of taking care of themselves without going into shock when fire appears. This was an ok book with the typical happily ever after ending but the first half of this book had me wanting to return it. It got more interesting but it took a while.

What three words best describe Kate Rudd’s voice?

nice and adequate

You Have To Love a Fireman’s Carry In a Romance

I read this series years ago when first published. This narrator is very slowly growing on me and she does a good job on this read. Nobody tells the classic romance better than Nora Roberts. When you’re a little down and mopey, just pick up one of her short, classic romances and they lift you up and fill your heart. This entire series is a good one and each story has a little mystery lots of romance and leaves you with a good feeling of happily ever after.

Nora Robert's 5 book "Night Tales Series" (1990s)

This is a collection of 5 books "Night Tales Series" that are interconnected with characters. Having read all of Nora Robert's books for almost 4 decades, I was disappointed listening to these 5 books now on Audible. I didn't care for the narrator at all. I do realize that these books were written quite a while ago (30+ years). I had actually read them these years ago (before Audible) but had forgotten until I started listening to them on Audible (2019). Special Note: Nora Robert's is by far my favorite Author. In my opinion, the quality of her writing, development of characters and storylines improves each and every year. I sure hope she doesn't retire soon!

Recommended

I think one of the reasons I like this series isbecause each story is so diffrent from the next. Yet each story has a good amount of suspense and romance without repeating the same basic story over and over. Visiting former characters, where they now are and what they are doing is an added bonus.

While the other stories are from more the police or judicial areas, this one opens up the shady world of fire and arsen.

Another excellent addition to an excellent series. Kate Rudd did a terrific job portraying the different characters and bring them to life.

As with all the stories in this series this one can stand on it's own but is enhanced when read in series.

Note: I have had the opportunity to read a number of series. I have never come across another that is as varied yet connected as this one. Kudos Ms. Roberts.

Hard to get through

I am a Nora Roberts fan but this book was just hard to get through.
The narration was painful to listen to .
Kate Rudd always sounded like she was about to jump off a cliff. Even in the romantic scenes there was no change in her tone or emotion.

Awesome

I love most everything of Nora Robert's and Night Smoke in the Night series is Everything! The story line has everything you need send want! Romance, mystery, suspense and some light humor thrown in for good measure. The narrator, Kate Rudd, is the best I've listen too. I wish she could narrate them all!

Much too long

What disappointed you about Night Smoke?

The build up was all in chapters 28-30, took forever to even get there. Way,way, too many F words, GD words, it's like " oh it's getting to the end of the book! I need to cuss here so it will seem like this story is really intense"

Would you ever listen to anything by Nora Roberts again?

Yes,

Would you be willing to try another one of Kate Rudd’s performances?

Ms Rudds characters were good, a little soft for the men and main character seems to be tripin' with all those husky sighs and junk.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointed because the author thinks that mystery stories must have trash talk in them to make them good. I maybe could have expected the villain to to fouled mouthed.....but the male heroic lead as well? It just didn't work for me.

Any additional comments?

I have many NR books and an extremely large listening library as well and this is one of the few I have had trouble finishing because of the foul language. I will be looking for another author that can fill my needs without so much vulgarities all at once T the end of the book. It's like she knew what people would think, so she used a tiny slip at the beginning then in then last 3 chapters she forgot to use a thesaurus when she need a word That wasn't a sware word. It seems like every other word out of the villain and heroe's mouth is fill with vulgaritie. Very, very disappointed in Ms Roberts.
