Publisher's summary

Do you want to know what it's like to die, to kill, to really fear for your life? Then get hooked....

Detroit-based homicide detective John Barnes has seen it all - literally. Thanks to a technologically advanced brain machine, detectives have access to the memories of the living, the dying, and the recently dead. But extracting victims' experiences firsthand and personally reliving everything up to the final, brutal moments of their lives - the sights, the sounds, the scents, the pain - is also the punishment reserved for the criminals themselves.

Barnes has had enough. Enough of the memories that aren't his. Enough of the horror. Enough of the voices inside his head that were never meant to take root...until a masked serial killer known as Calavera strikes a little too close to home.

Now, with Calavera on the loose, Barnes is ready to reconnect, risking his life - and his sanity. Because in the mind of this serial killer, there is one secret even Barnes has yet to see....

Fun sci-fi murder/mystery

Interesting concept to tie in to a murder/mystery to give it a sci-fi element. Very enjoyable to listen to; narrated in a warm, soothing voice that modified just enough to highlight conflict, tension, and mystery. Great story.

A tad gruesome, but interesting psycho- drama

if you can get through some of the shocking violence in setting up the story, it's an interesting story.

Mesmerizing!

A truly unique and suspenseful thriller. Raises morality questions about whether you should have access to an individual 's memory. That's of course if this whole situation were possible. Barnes is a great character with lots of depth and personal demons he is struggling with as he hunts for a serial killer who is also in torment. If you're looking for something different to read this is the book for you.

Enjoyable Listen

This book would make an interesting television series. I was fascinated by the interaction between Barns and the deceased crime victims.

Intense Read!!

This book is not for the timid or the queasy. My knees felt weak a large portion of the time, as Barnes relived Calavera's victim's final moments. It was an incredible, suspenseful ride that paid off at the end in a big way.

The performer of this book hit the mark. His reading style encompassed every emotion the author set out to portray. I typically read books myself and only use the Audible app when I'm walking my dog but I found myself listening to this story more than reading it myself because the performer truly brought the story to life in a way that simply reading couldn't do.

Very intersting read and great story

Detective Barnes is a troubled soul with a difficult past but his past is what drives hime to do what he does best get the bad guys. This paticular villian requires him to face that past and go down a road of turmoil and heartache.
This book keep me intrested till the very end and left me with a satified feeling of accomplisment and closure. Deffinilty a good read

different type of storyline

This book was hard to get into at first. I think the only reason I continued was because the storyline was unique. I'm glad I continued - It got better. It was confusing until I got a better handle of the machine and what it did. I can't imagine living with all those voices in my head and feeling the pain of all the wounds let alone try to put together the pieces of the puzzle to solve the crimes at the same time. The audible narration was good - I probably would have liked it better if I had sped it up some then maybe it wouldn't seem so dragged out.
