Publisher's Summary

Bo Lowery and her 10-year-old son have hunted the woods surrounding their Alaskan home for as long as Caleb can remember. What they don't eat themselves, they sell to local businesses, using every part of the animal. Disgusted by the wolf cull, pop megastar Rainey Layne and her bodyguard Darius travel to Bo's small town to join a growing group of animal activists.
After Bo and Rainey clash during the protest, Rainey pulls mother and son headfirst into her manic, self-absorbed world when she crashes her car on their land. Soon, she finds herself their unwilling guest. But in the age of instant communication, celebrities can't just disappear without the whole world demanding them found.
In a violent showdown between hunter and activist, tensions within the Lowery household are dragged into the light. Both women harbor dark secrets. But Rainey Layne will learn just how far a mother pushed to the edge will go to protect her child.

Excellent audio book brings thriller to life

This is the first audiobook I've heard and Rebecca Ortese skillfully brings to life Duncan Ralston's thriller. Set in Alaska, the book's plot races forward with each event further fleshing out compelling characters who illustrate a collision of two ways of life and belief systems. It's hard not to root for Bo Lowery, a single mom making a living for her 8-year-old son Caleb by hunting for food and selling the remaining parts of the animals. When she is making a delivery to a general store, a profane and entitled pop singer Rainey Layne, in town to protest the wolf cull, confronts her and events are set in motion. As we learn more about the characters and their backgrounds, things become more complicated and the ending is both surprising and inevitable. There is some graphic violence that is appropriate to the story. Duncan Ralston is a talented writer, with excellent pacing and descriptive abilities. Rebecca Ortese does a masterful job narrating, nailing accents and tone from Bo's Louisiana twang to the East Texas drawl of Rainey's bodyguard Darius. She is effective in distinguishing varied ages from twenty-something Rainey to 8 year-old Caleb. Her skill allows the voices to deepen the characters and her clear diction really enlivens the story and makes for easy listening. I highly recommend the audio book for a visceral experience of this satisfying thriller.
