Publisher's Summary

Kay Hamilton, the beautiful, fearless, and audacious DEA agent who went rogue in Rosarito Beach, has paid the price for her subversive behavior. As Viking Bay begins, Kay has been fired by the DEA and needs a job to support herself and her teenage daughter. Kay moves to Washington D.C. and connects with the Callahan Group, a shadowy quasi-governmental agency with an enigmatic agenda. For her first mission, Kay is told only a few facts: that the U.S. government wants Sahid Khan, a provincial Afghan governor, to become the nation's next president, and that Khan's daughter Ara - a Western-educated former party girl - is her father's key political advisor. Kay Hamilton is the perfect undercover operative to learn Ara's secrets and sway her thinking in line with America's interests. But when things go horribly wrong at a clandestine meeting in Afghanistan, Kay emerges at the center of an international plot that makes her question those she loves, those she works for, and her own faith in justice.

I am generally a fan of Mike Lawson's books and I looked forward to this novel. However, this was definately not one of his better works. I found myself re-listening to many chapters just to be certain that I was following the story line. In the first book of this series I found the protagonist, Kay, an exciting and intriguing character full of potential. However, in Viking Bay her behavior and manorisms felt out of character with the first novel. In fact, in several instances of "moral dilemas" I found Kay's decisions and actions diststeful and disappointing. At times I found it hard to want to support her and realized that if something bad were to happen to her I wouldn't fact, I remember feeling that the story may progress better without her.

Most books of this genre frequently jump outside the lines of reality. Perhaps that escape is why many people - including me - enjoy these types of thrillers. However, the jumps from reality in this book were too overwhelming for me to overlook. Getting through this novel was hard as I had to 'force' myself to listen to it. I will likely listen to Mike Lawson's next novel, but as for MA Lawson and his 'Kay' series...I'm done.

Mike Lawson started a new series with Kay Hamilton and it is just as good as the Joe Demarco series. The book was easy to follow and listen to, not very many characters to concentrate on.
