Publisher's Summary

Internationally best-selling author Wilbur Smith returns with a heart-racing story of family secrets, greed, and revenge.
Hector Cross left behind a career of high risks and warfare when he married his beloved Hazel Bannock. But after his new life is tragically upended, he recognizes the ruthless hand of an old enemy behind the attack. Determined to fight back, Hector draws together a team of his most loyal friends and fellow warriors to hunt down those who pursue him and his loved ones. For he and Hazel have a child, a precious daughter, whom he will go to the ends of the earth to protect.
Soon, however, Hector learns that the threat comes not just from his old enemies, but also Hazel's. Brutal figures from her family's past - thought long gone - are returning, with an agenda so sinister that Hector realizes he is facing a new type of adversary. One whose deadly methods and dark secrets will lead Hector to a series of crimes so shocking that he has no choice but to settle the score.

not the best not the worst,

What would have made Vicious Circle better?

a. audible stop with your leading questions.
b. While an ok book, it was extremely gory and not really very entertaining. I was at least able to finish this one, and I have stopped one other Smith book that just drug on.
The characters are thin, the oration is ok, not great, and the long phase of the "history" re-cap lost me and I fast forwarded through that.
Unfortunately, my iPhone jumped backwards, yet again, and I had to fast forward all over again. Any whooooo, I really liked one or two other books, but this one seemed stuck in writer re-cap land and it was hard to move on to the new story. When it did the characters jumped back n forth a good bit, which made it hard to keep my attention.
Wish I wouldn't of wasted a credit.

Would you ever listen to anything by Wilbur Smith again?

only after i read a lot of reviews.

What didn’t you like about John Lee’s performance?

his american accents were juvenile and really didn't match the characters personality.
very disconcerting.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Vicious Circle?

the long history recap scenes, the gory murder episodes, his painful to listen to romance/sex scenes, which add nothing to the book IMHO, and his adulation for all british cars on every continent.
I don't really care about which wine they drink with a spectacular made up meal.

Any additional comments?

Not sure I'll buy another Smith book. When they are bad, they are really bad, when they are mediocre, they are truly mediocre.
This one is a re-cap that is mediocre.

Wilbur Smith goes overboard

As a usual fan of all of Wilbur Smith novels I was disappointed. The prequel "Those In Peril" had a good story and a fair share of action without running amuck!

A couple murders in this book were so sickly graphic as to be disturbing even to an old 70 year old. A good tale that went too far...
