Publisher's Summary

Lucas Davenport confronts an old nemesis, now more powerful than ever as a US senator, in the thrilling new novel in the number one New York Times best-selling Prey series.
Lucas Davenport had crossed paths with her before.
A rich psychopath, Taryn Grant had run successfully for the US Senate, where Lucas had predicted she'd fit right in. He was also convinced that she'd been responsible for three murders, though he'd never been able to prove it. Once a psychopath had gotten that kind of rush, though, he or she often needed another fix, so he figured he might be seeing her again.
He was right. A federal marshal now, with a very wide scope of investigation, he's heard rumors that Grant has found her seat on the Senate intelligence committee, and the contacts she's made from it, to be very...useful. Pinning those rumors down was likely to be just as difficult as before, and considerably more dangerous.
But they had unfinished business, he and Grant. One way or the other, he was going to see it through to the end.

STILL WORTH IT

Sanford's new mystery, Twisted Prey, is not quite as good as his prior novels, but it's still a well-written story and worth a listen. Richard Ferrone's unique voice and narration, including his playful interpretation of Sanford's witticism and droll remarks throughout the story, are again top-notch.

John Sandford seems to like female antagonists!

This is the second novel in the 28 book Lucas Davenport series that has him working for the US Marshall Service rather than the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Davenport's family plays a relatively small part. In general I find novels in this series that have larger roles for his physician wife Weather or their adopted college age daughter Letty or their young son Sam are more interesting. Twisted Prey is an outstanding modern detective suspense mystery despite the small roles of Davenport's family. The antagonist is a very clever US senator named Taryn Grant who is a psychopath with presidential ambitions who hires people to kill her enemies and then personally kills the hit men to protect her identity. She is smart enough that even Lucas Davenport is unable to arrest her for her crimes. Richard Ferrone narrates as usual for John Sandford novels. Ferrone is not one of the best at his craft, but he is excellent. I recommend this complex novel for those who like detective suspense mysteries.
