This is a great book; this is a great book written by M. Ruth Myers and narrated by Mary Ann Jacobs. When Depression-era private eye Maggie Sullivan is invited to dine with a millionaire, she doesn't expect the first course to be a gun in her face. It draws her into a gold-plated web of theft, revenge, double crosses, and murder. A big-time swindle has made fools of some of the city's wealthiest businessmen. The man behind it has vanished. When Maggie begins asking questions, he reappears - dead in the river. But she's already learned too much. Someone's out to silence her too. Armed with her .38 and a nip of gin, Maggie closes in on a killer as a mobster offers a hint, a cop unsettles her with his chemistry, and a woman with deadly potential plays a game by her own rules. This is a great set with a wonderful story and well developed characters. The story flowed very well and was very enjoyable. This book will keep you reading long into the night and you will not want to put this book down until you finish. This was such a great read and full of surprises. The narrator Mary Ann Jacobs did a wonderful job with this book. She did a great job with the different voices of each character in this book. It was very easy to listen to and I didn’t want to stop listening until the end. If you are looking for a great book with well-developed characters then you need to listen to this book. I am looking forward to listening to the next book by this author and narrator. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
I really like the main character, Maggie! She is very likable and I definitely plan to read more from this author. Tough Cookie is fun and entertaining, and I recommend those who enjoy Cozy Mysteries add it to their library.
I have listened to this narrator before, and she does a great job! Her voice, inflection, volume, & pace are right on! I hope to hear much more of her in the future!
I'm loving this series - in Maggie Sullivan, author M Ruth Myers has created a strong, capable, sassy, quick witted & sharp tongued female PI, and brings to life 1940's depression-era US, with impeccable attention to detail: language, attitudes, fashions etc. Mary Ann Jacobs' narration is perfect, enveloping the listener with Maggie Sullivan's world, and I'm already looking forward to book 3. Brava, ladies!
