Publisher's summary
Veronica Little is a waitress at the Splendid Affair Bar and Inn in Elmer Texas. The year is 1936, and she falls in love with Jim Bell. Over the three years she works there, she sees seven young girls never return to work. As Sheriff Al Lively and Deputy Brown investigate, their investigations come up with little.
Thus Veronica and the remaining waitresses take the law into their own hands. Set in the late 1930s, a tale of local mass murder draws the spotlight on this small town. Yet each murder is a tale of its own. Of the seven missing girls, only one escapes with her life.
Veronica does not know who to trust. From her lover, Jim, to the preacher, or Willie, Jim's maintenance man, she runs a gauntlet to try to solve the murders of Elmer. What seems to be the truth here becomes fiction, as fiction becomes the truth.
