Publisher's summary

Former homicide detective Nicole Foster has hit rock bottom. Driven off the force by her treacherous partner and lover, she's flat broke and struggling with a gambling addiction. All Nicole has left is the dream of a warm bed at a homeless shelter and the haunting memories of three-year-old Kelsey Chase—whose murder case ended her career.

As Nicole obsesses over the old facts, she realizes everything about that case felt off: a disinterested mom, a suicidal pedophile, and too many questions left unanswered. When the little girl's grieving father begs Nicole for help, she's drawn back into the investigation...and given one shot at redemption.

But the deeper Nicole digs, the more evil she uncovers, including betrayals that hit painfully close to home. Will a shocking discovery be the key to finally getting justice for Kelsey and resurrecting her own life?

Tough story

It was hard to listen to Nicole's addiction lead her to lose everything but in the end I hoped there would be justice. There was not. Very disappointed in the ending.

Disappointing ending

Yet another story about a crooked and inept, weak female cop. stringing out the story and doing a hasty wrap up of an ending with no real resolution to all of the complicated characters previously introduced.

The last hour of the book pulled out the 3rd star

What did you like best about The Sound of Rain? What did you like least?

Best-The twists and turns at the end
Worst-The author should study police procedure

Would you be willing to try another book from Gregg Olsen? Why or why not?

Probably not for the reason I listed as WORST part of the book

Do you think The Sound of Rain needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No

Any additional comments?

I stopped reading this book several times. The authors police investigation was bad writing and in no way believable. I strongly dislike giving a bad review. If you can overlook this part and get through it, the last 1/4 or so is pretty good.

Loved this book...

Loved this book, didn't want to put it down. Many twist and turns. About children sad, but this is the world today. I highly recommend this book.

Wow

It took a long while to like the main character, but once I did, this story grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

Unlikeable characters in a dark ugly plot

I've enjoyed other books by this author but this one left me cold. Child pornography, violence, psychopaths and sociopaths...even the main character was so easily duped that she was not relatable. I slogged through hoping for a redeeming ending but it was predictable and just fell flat. Wish I'd saved my time and money.

Nothing is as it seems; twists and turns

Just when I thought I had it figured out there was another twist. It's impossible to determine who the bad guys are until the end.

Go Carolina Tar Heels!!

The plot's a hot mess

It had the makings of a good thriller but then the plot got so contorted and confusing that it just doesn't compute. I'm normally a fan of Olsen but this one just doesn't fly.

I just LOVE OLSEN/ PEAKES ❤️ 📚 🎤

As I read through some of these reviews, I’m beginning to question my own sanity and taste. I have literally listened to this series three times, and I love it more every single time. I cannot imagine anyone other than Karen Peakes adding as much value to this book as she did.

Maybe it’s turning listeners off that there is a lot of satire and dry humor throughout, even though it is a very dark subject matter. For me, this is a winning combination. It doesn’t mean that the author doesn’t care or feel devastated for children who are abused, abducted and or murdered. Those are tragedies I cannot even imagine. But I think this is a really good way to tell a dark fictional thriller without completely suffocating or depressing the reader.

Stacy 👱‍♀️, the highest maintenance sister in history, makes me 😹😹😹 (until you realize how messed up this twisted plot really is, but again, I like to enjoy a laugh when I can get it).

If you have a not given the Olsen/ Peakes combination a real fighting chance, listen to them again and try some of their other books. I believe The Hive is the newest release, And once again, Peakes’s performance made the book GREAT and it also gave some insight into the world of cults and brainwashing in a slightly satirical way.
