Publisher's summary

Simon Serrailler has just wrapped up a difficult case for SIFT--Special Incident Flying Taskforce--and is on a sabbatical on a far-flung Scottish island when he is called back to Lafferton. Two local prostitutes have gone missing and are subsequently found strangled. By the time he gets back, another girl has disappeared. Is this a vendetta against prostitutes by someone with a warped mind? Or a series of killings by an angry punter? When the wife of the St. Michael¹s Cathedral Dean goes missing and then another respectable woman is taken on her way to work, the townspeople grow angry and afraid. Serrailler follows lead after lead, all of which become dead ends. It is only through a piece of luck, a chance meeting, and a life put in grave danger that he finally gets a result.

Getting better and better

I'm working my way through the Serailler stories in order, and they keep getting better. This one had just the right amount of characters so that I could keep track of who is who. The story was great, very engaging.

Never disappointing

I always figure it out, but the books are well written and the narrator is outstanding. Smart to keep using the same person, makes it comfortable.
Well worth listening but start with book 1 and get to know everyone.

Dark Thriller

The story moved progressively and steadily, unlike most of the others in the series... A dark harrowing tale about night life for many women, trying to get by in life. A myriad of emotions with this one..
Stephen Pacey is brilliant!

Murder on the Path

The police are left with no clues as prostitutes are murdered nightly. The head of the local church wants to help these women, the librarian wants help these women, and one man wants help them into the afterlife. This story never slows down for a moment.

Predictable and Pedestrian

Overall, it is a 3.5 star book. Steven Pacey as usual did a great job and due because of his work i was able to complete the book.

It is a slow pedestrian book. Book does focus mostly on the life of victims and does not discuss much of the methods or the motivations of the killer. So, the books turned into about baby sitting problems when folks going out to work, weather is very cold outside and other dangers of working on the street.

Most of all book was predictable that a reader is not going to be surprised when the killer comes forth.

Great series

I love the characters, the family, the little town, and of course, the way the author weaves mystery and terror into ordinary lives.

Awesome narrator.

Fascinating Characters

This story has a lot to offer. There is a good mystery "whodunit" here that I couldn't figure out before it was revealed in the story. What sets this series apart for me is the cast of characters.

The story revolves around a series of murders. However I find the series more about the people than police procedure. It's the recurring characters that makes these books special for me.

Steven Pacey's narration is excellent.

Not Much Mystery, but Still Listenable

I was really anticipating listening to this book because although I’ve heard radio adaptations of some of Susan Hill’s stories, I had never read a novel. She is highly acclaimed, and this novel seemed right down my alley. I also really enjoy Steven Pacey as a narrator. I did read in some reviews that Hill goes off on a few tangents, but I’m usually tolerant of some digressions, so I went ahead and bought this one. That was a mistake. I wanted a MYSTERY, but this novel doesn’t even introduce the crime until about one-third through. Further, Simon Serailler, the supposed main character is out of the picture for a good portion of the story. Especially irritating were the prolonged discussions of church politics. The book is well-written and engaging for what it actually is, and Pacey does an excellent job; I did listen to it. It is, however, NOT primarily a mystery. Because I did like the characters and Hill is a good writer, I will probably try another novel in this series, but this one was a bit of a dud.
