Publisher's summary

For vibrant, lovely Jean Suttman, the fellowship to study in Rome was the culmination of her dreams, until she undertook an innocent expedition to the ancient Temple of Mithra. From the moment she stepped into the pagan darkness and discovered the corpse of Albert, one of her fellow students, she was afraid.

Not even the comforting presence of the perceptive and practical Jacqueline Kirby could erase the fear that was nourished by one small accident after another, "accidents" that came dreadfully close to killing her. Someone was stalking Jean, someone ruthless and determined.

Before long she could see no chance of rescue from the ever-present terror, no hope of escape, nothing but death.

Adventure . . . and Murder in Rome

I'm a big fan of the Amelia Peabody Mysteries by Elizabeth Peters, so when I ran across this series, I had to give it a try. Its different . . . and took me a little while to get accustomed to, but its also very enjoyable, with quirky characters and a very smart librarian, who is a little set in her ways. 😉 She pretends to be put off my the college age set, in Rome on fellowships, but really its her protection mechanism, as she navigates the investigation of what she knows to be a murder. I felt like I knew Jacqueline Kirby a lot better as the book came closer to the end. The descriptions of ancient Rome and the sites that the students visited were extraordinary and a big part of the story (a sometimes frightening part). The crafty way that she comes to a resolution on the murder is first rate. I will definitely be continuing the series.

A Clever Mystery

This story is told without Jacquelyn Kirby 's POV. She is only on the sidelines.

Mispronounced

Rothenburg, where this book took place, was mispronounced!!! It amazes me that this can actually happen and no one catches the error. I couldn’t listen to the entire book.

has potential

story premise is great. loved the details of Rome. the way the plot was laid out was flat. would have benefited from better character development. did not find a primary character. discovering dead friend scene was flat without suspense.

Very Disappointing

I'm so glad that I listened to "The Murders of Richard III" first., because if I hadn't I would not have read any more of Ms. Peters books. Obviously this is one of her early ones. The premise of the mystery was good, Actually getting there with the tedious exposition and characterization was not. It just seemed to drone on & on at times.

That being said, the main sleuth, Jacqueline Kirby was well developed and left you wanting to know more about her.

Grace Conklin, the narrator, was excellent.

interesting

Pretty good idea for a book. Sometimes a little confusing because of all the characters. The narration was very good. It was a little freaky in the catacombs. Claustrophobia don't you know.

Monotone performance with mispronunciations

I honestly don’t know whether I would have enjoyed this book with a different reader. It certainly seemed boring.

Fun, Slightly Disturbing Mystery

Whizzed right thru the adventure. Easy to follow. I had to roll my eyes to some outdated stereotyping. Other than that, I dreamt I was on the Roman quest.
