Publisher's summary

Gerry Wade had proved himself to be a champion sleeper, so the other houseguests decided to play a practical joke on him. Eight alarm clocks were set to go off, one after the other, starting at 6:30 a.m. But when morning arrived, one clock was missing and the prank then backfired, with tragic consequences.

For Jimmy Thesiger in particular, the words "Seven Dials" were to take on a new and chilling significance....

Skip this narrator

This was a fun mystery with Superintendent Battle and the gang from Chimneys. Great characters with standard Agatha Christie twists. But do yourself a favor and read it in print. I love Emilia Fox as an actress. As a narrator, she was horrid. Her character voices were obnoxious and over-the-top. I listened on my commute, but as soon as my work week was over, I switched to print to finish the book. Just...ugh. I want Hugh Fraser back!

It's Agatha, but not Hugh

I love Agatha Christie as much as the next person but I really struggled to get through this one. Like many reviewers, I found Emilia Fox's performance to be over the top and extremely hard to listen to. Probably like many of those folks, my library is full of outstanding Hugh Frasier narrations so it's entirely possible this only suffers by comparison. It was so hard to listen to it's hard to even comment on the quality of the story. If you're a new collector of the Christie Cannon from audible by all means try this one out. If you're addicted to Hugh Frasier give this a pass. You won't like it.

Stunning ending

I couldn't believe the ending...never had clue. This was an enjoyable story, and the tie-in to The Secret of Chimneys was an added pleasure.

I had to warm up to the narrator and would hesitate to buy an audiobook with her as the reader again. She has a nasal, high-pitched voice that is jarring to the ear. Diana Bishop (Patricia Wentworth's Miss Silver series) has a cultured, smooth voice that would be better suited to classic British country house mysteries.

Funny and a Good Story

One of Christie's funniest books that flies along. Great performance by the reader. Top notch!

Audio book could not keep my interest

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The beginning of the book is fine but after about an hour into it, I started to lose interest and could not figure what was supposed to be going on. It was not until the denouement at the end, that I got a glimpse of what the plot of the story was.

What could Agatha Christie have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Agatha Christie is one of my fave authors of all times, but this book was dull. The characters weren't interesting.

Which character – as performed by Emilia Fox – was your favorite?

None of them.

Did The Seven Dials Mystery inspire you to do anything?

Take a nap.

Any additional comments?

The Seven Dials Mystery is supposed to be a pseudo-sequel to the Secret of Chimneys, to me, it is not. Yes, there are some four repeat characters and a murder takes place at Chimneys in both books, but that is it, It is not a continuation of Chimenys at all.

A Classic

Though not as we’ll known as other Agatha Christie novels, this mystery is as well written and fun as some other more famous ones. The Emilia Fox reading is priceless.

Poor narration

The narrator was very robotic especially with the male voices. Storyline drawn out and could have been much shorter.

A light mystery

Any additional comments?

The story has Christie's usual cleverness, but is much lighter in tone than most of her other novels. Emilia Fox did a competent job narrating, but in a good performance, the voice actor or actress disappears; however, at various points (especially with older male characters), all I could hear was an actress doing a funny voice. Her voice for Superintendent Battle was particularly distracting, which made key scenes less effective. I still enjoyed it overall, though.

Narration starts off rough

This is a great story. I am glad I stuck with it. I almost returned the book because the beginning narration was so rough. It got better as the story progressed. I encourage listeners to stick with it.

Mystery plus humor!

I loved the humor throughout all of this mystery! Agatha Christie doesn’t disappoint. 😁

I did need to speed up the narration, but when I did it was perfect!
